The Mousetrap is an informal name for Interstate 25 and Interstate 70 exchange in the north of Denver, Colorado, USA. The exchange began just before the Interstate Highway System, originally built as a crossroads between two local roads in 1951. The exchange was completely rebuilt, beginning in 1987. The redesign was requested from an incident in which a US Navy truck hauls an inverse torpedo, causing panic and big disruptions in the city.

The exchange was built in 1951, as the intersection between 46th Avenue, and US Highway 87. The name "mouse trap" was invented by radio reporter of the old air traffic of Don Martin in the 1960s, calling the "labyrinthine crossroads that could trap a mouse." In the original design, interchange swamps include a sharp curve, some of which are abandoned, not the correct exit. When construction began on Interstate 70, 46th Avenue alignment was used for expressways, while Interstate 25 was built directly on alignment of US $ 87. Although Mousetrap's design did not comply with the Interstate Highway standards, the intersection was grandfathered onto the Interstate Highway system.

Incident

An accident in Mousetrap has a national impact. On August 1, 1984, a truck carrying six torpedoes for the US Navy was reversed. The situation got worse because nobody answered on the phone number provided with the cargo, and unknown fluid leaked from one of the torpedoes. It took more than three hours before military personnel arrived at the US - site. Army personnel from nearby base. The incident left thousands of cars stranded and the Denver transport network paralyzed for about eight hours. About 50 residents in the area were evacuated. Investigations later revealed that truckers did not follow the recommended route provided by state troops, and were specifically warned to avoid a mousetrap. The Navy promised reforms after being criticized for not providing valid phone numbers, staffing with dangerous cargo shipments, violations of federal law, and failing to notify Denver officials about shipments. This incident provided momentum for rebuilding the intersection with a more modern and safer design. Construction began in several phases in 1987 and the last bridge was dedicated in 2003.
