Plot
Henry Roth is a veterinarian at Sea Life Park on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. She has a reputation as a woman who is feminized and shows no interest in making a serious relationship. Henry's closest friends are Ula, a smoking cigarette seducer; his assistant Alexa, whose sex is not clear; Willy, her pet African penguin; and Jocko, a walrus.
One day Henry's ship was damaged as he sailed around Oahu. He went to Cafe Hukilau to wait for the Coast Guard. There he saw a young woman named Lucy Whitmore, who made architectural art with her waffle. Henry thinks he is a local, which prevents him from introducing him, but the next day he returns. Lucy and he hit her right away and she asked her to meet him again in the morning.
However, when Henry returns to the cafà © à the next day, Lucy has no memory to meet her. The restaurant owner Sue explained to Henry that the year before, Lucy and her father Marlin had gone to the North Shore to pick pineapples for her birthday. On the way back, they had a serious car accident that caused Lucy to be exposed to anterograde amnesia and she woke up every morning thinking it was Sunday, October 13 last year.
To forgive Lucy a heartbroken recall of the accident every day, Marlin and Doug, Lisping's addicted lisping sister, again married Marlin's birthday following scripts, including snapping out Sunday papers, refilling Lucy's shampoo bottles, watching the same one again. The game Minnesota Vikings, and watching the movie The Sixth Sense where Marlin and Doug halfheartedly said, "Wow, do not see it coming," during the famous plot-twist.
Despite Sue's warning, Henry invites Lucy to breakfast with her. Finally he did it, but it ended badly when Henry accidentally hurt Lucy's feelings. She follows her home to apologize where Marlin and Doug instruct Henry to leave Lucy alone. Henry begins to concoct ways to meet Lucy in the following days, such as pretending to have car trouble, making fake street blocks, or with Ula hitting him. Finally, Marlin and Doug think of this because Lucy sang The Beach Boys "It Will not be Fun" on the days when she met Henry.
One day, when Henry will sit with Lucy at breakfast, he sees a police officer writing a ticket for his expired plate. Lucy tries to declare that they are not yet out of date, and picks up the newspaper to prove her, but sees that the date in all newspapers is not October 13th as she thought. Lucy rushes home, and Marlin and Doug are forced to admit their ruse when she confronts them (and maybe not for the first time; when Marlin sees Lucy's panicky behavior as her truck pulls into the house, she immediately realizes what's happening and loudly announces to Doug that Lucy "had a bad day").
Henry came up with the idea to make a video explaining to Lucy the accident and his relationship. Although Lucy is angry over his understanding of the accident and his loss of memory, Henry believes that he is more annoyed to realize his life is a lie every day. Because of this, Henry, Marlin and Doug show Lucy the tape every morning and help her spend her days by picking up where the tape says she left off. He spends more time with Henry and goes to meet some of his old friends. Lucy decides to completely remove Henry from her life after learning of her decision not to travel to Bristol Bay to study walrus, something she has planned for the last 10 years. Although Henry prefers to spend the year making Lucy fall in love with him every day rather than going on a sailing trip, Lucy is sure she is a burden to him and hinders Henry to actually live his life. Henry reluctantly helps Lucy destroy his journal entries about their relationship.
A few weeks later, Henry was preparing to leave for his sailing journey. Before he left, Marlin told him that Lucy now lives in a brain institute and teaches an art class. She also tells him that she sings. Then he gave the Henry a Beach Boys CD. Listening to the CD, Henry becomes emotional and cursed Marlin for giving her a CD and causing her to lose Lucy. He then remembers that Marlin once told him that Lucy only sang after she met him. Concluding that Lucy remembers her, she goes home. Henry rushes to the brain agency where Lucy now lives and asks if she knows who she is. Lucy says she does not know him but shows him the pictures he has painted about him, saying that he dreams about it every night.
Some time later, Lucy wakes up and plays the videotape marked "Good Morning Lucy." It again tells him about his accident, but ends up with him and Henry's wedding. On the tape, Henry says to wear a jacket and come to breakfast when he is ready. Lucy then sees that she's on a Henry ship, which finally gets to Alaska. He climbed onto the deck and met Marlin, Henry and their daughter, Nicole.

Production
The film was originally titled "50 First Kisses". Drew Barrymore, who knew the original script, wrote to Sandler and suggested the next movie together. By 2014, Barrymore says it's more of a drama and rewritten by Sandler and they're working on it being more of a comedy.
Location
Most of the movie was taken at a location in Kaneohe, Ka? A? Awa, Wahiaw ?, Makapu? U, and Waim? Nalo, Oahu, as well as at K'ne'ohe Bay. Due to the high cost of filming outside the studio zone, some of the interior scenes (such as in Whitmore's residence) were shot in a set in Los Angeles carefully decorated to look like they were in Hawaii.
The walrus tank is actually at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, California, and the golf course is the Ocean Trails Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.
Critical reception
The film received mixed reviews from critics. Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 44% score based on 175 reviews, and the site's consensus states that Gross-out humor controls the easy chemistry between Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, who brings energy and yucks to the story, a girl with short-term memory loss and people who try to make him love him. "
Critics who enjoy this movie (such as the New York Times reviewer A. O Scott) praised the affirming story while lamenting the seemingly exaggerated and inconsistent amount of humor and drug reference. Roger Ebert gave it three out of four stars, saying "The film is sort of an experiment for Sandler. He reveals the warm side of his personality, and abandons hatred, anger and gross humor... The film does not have the complexity and depth of Groundhog Day. ... but as entertainment it is very interesting and fun. "
Sandler and Barrymore won the award for Best On-Screen Team at the MTV Movie Awards. The two actors, who previously worked together in the popular movie The Wedding Singer, are said to have regarded <50 First Dates as one of their personal favorite endeavors.
Fictitious medical conditions
In an article in BMJ on amnesia depiction in films, clinical neuropsychologist Sallie Baxendale writes that 50 First Dates "retains a respectable film tradition to describe amnesia syndrome that does not contain the associated conditions neurological or psychiatric known ".
In 2010, researchers described a woman who developed this type of memory disorder after she was involved in a car accident. He describes that his memory is normal for the event on the same day and that the last night's memories for the previous day are gone. However, neuropsychological tests do reveal some improvement in recall for the tasks that he did, unknowingly, performed the day before. Although the woman claimed to have never seen the First Date before her 2005 crash (but has watched it several times since), she states that Drew Barrymore is her favorite actress, leading researchers to conclude that her condition may have been influenced by some knowledge of the movie plot, and its impact on his understanding of amnesia. Similarly, in the Truman Show imaginary, patients believe they live on reality television shows, such as in the 1998 film The Truman Show .
In July 2015, two men were found to have a form of anterograde amnesia that resembles that depicted in the film. One of them is a man in England, coming from Germany. He wakes up every day thinking it is March 14, 2005, because it was the day he underwent anesthesia for dental procedures that caused this condition as an unexplained rare complication (however, his anterograden amnesia, as experienced by others with this condition, caused him forget facts not everyday, but in 90 minutes). The other is a woman who reportedly believes daily is October 15, 2014. She once became a pub manager and visited Kettering General Hospital for kickboxing injuries when she slipped and hit her head on a metal pole.
The Ten Sep Ten memory is similar to the second-second consciousness of Clive Wearing, an Englishman whose long-term and short-term memory center was destroyed from viral infections of the brain caused by the herpes virus.
Real-world applications â ⬠<â â¬
The Hebrew Home of Riverdale, New York has embarked on an experimental program in which residents with early dementia watch videos every morning where they see entertaining messages and reminders from family members they may still know about. After April 2015, the program could include more people. Robert Abrams of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital considers this idea "innovative and wise." Charlotte Dell, director of social services for home, said the program was inspired by 50 First Date .
Soundtrack
The soundtrack contains a cover version of the songs originally recorded in the 1980s. This includes most reggae coverings, due to their optimistic emphasis that gives a tropical or Hawaiian feel. It was a moderate commercial hit, reaching # 30 on Billboard 200 and # 1 on Top Soundtracks charts and Top Reggae Albums charts in the United States.
Although prominently featured in the film, either Kamakawiwo Ole's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"/"What a Wonderful World" or The Beach Boys' "Would not It Be Nice" be included on the soundtrack.
This soundtrack was produced by frontman 311, Nick Hexum. 311 provides The Cure's Lovesong cover for the soundtrack. It sounded over the final credit of the movie.
