Description

The aircraft is a Boeing 727-21 operated by Avianca, Colombia's national airline. Flight 410 is a regular scheduled domestic passenger flight from CÃÆ'ºcuta-Camilo Daza International Airport (CUC) to Cartagena de Indias-Rafael NÃÆ'ºÃÆ'  ± ez International Airport (CTG). The plane crashed on Mount El Espartillo shortly after takeoff from runway 33 in CÃÆ'ºcuta.

The aircraft registration number is HK-1716. The plane had flown earlier with Pan Am, as # N321PA (Clipper Koln-Bonn); it was sold on September 20, 1974, to Avianca. The aircraft was built in 1966, and has 44,000 hours of airframe time.

The 410 Flight Accident holds the record for the highest death toll from any aviation crash in Colombia until December 20, 1995 when American Airlines Flight 965 hit a mountain near Buga, Valle del Cauca, killing 159 people. The cause is determined to be a pilot error.

AV410 takes off from CÃÆ'ºcuta between 13:13 and 13:17 from runway 33 to Cartagena. There was no further information from HK-1716 until landlord claimed that they saw the Boeing 727 aircraft flying too low. The plane contacted several trees and then, at 13:18:01, hit the head of the mountain. 727 broke apart and crumbled when fuel exploded; the remains are scattered within a radius of 60m. There were no survivors between 7 crew and 136 passengers.

Rescue operations and commissions rushed to the crash site, which could not have been achieved due to nightfall and low visibility. Residents in the region provide light and help the savior reach the top of the mountain, where the rest of HK-1716 is fared badly. The next day, the remains were transported back to CÃÆ'ºcuta to be identified by their family members.

The official cause of the accident was the controlled flight to the terrain at 6,343 feet. The investigation points to a number of possible causes, including non-crew pilots in the cockpit, whose presence diverts the attention of the pilot and who disrupts aircraft operations, and the lack of teamwork (crew resource management) between the pilot and co-pilot.
