Charles Desmond Davies (born June 25, 1986) is a retired American soccer player.

Davies arranged some football records at his high school, Brooks School, before appearing for the Boston College Eagles and Westchester Flames in college. Davies signed his first professional contract with Swedish club Allsvenskan Hammarby IF in December 2006 before joining Sochaux in July 2009.

Davies has been closed seventeen times for the United States national team, with four international goals.

On October 13, 2009, Davies was involved in a serious car crash at the George Washington Parkway that killed fellow passengers and left Davies with a severe injury that kept him out of the 2010 World Cup, effectively ending his international career.

On July 30, 2016, Davies and the New England Revolution announced that he had been diagnosed with cancer.

Youth and college

Born in Manchester, New Hampshire, as a child Davies was encouraged to play soccer and trained by his father Kofi Davies, an immigrant from Gambia. He attended Brooks School in North Andover, Massachusetts and graduated in 2004. While there he arranged numerous Brooks score records, scored twenty-nine and thirty goals in his junior and senior seasons, respectively. In his senior campaign, Davies led Brooks School to a 15-0 league record, and the New England Class-A Championship. Davies also starred in wrestling at Brooks, earning his senior National Prep All-American season.

After prep school, Davies studied at Boston College, where he starred in the Eagles for three seasons. His sophomore season was cut short due to a knee injury suffered in the first half of the opening season. During his college years he also played with Westchester Flames from the USL Premier League Development League, scoring six goals in nine appearances. He was a finalist for the Hermann Trophy in 2006, closing his comeback season. He finished his college career with twenty-four goals and ten assists in thirty-seven games, including fifteen goals in his last sixteen games of the season.

Professional career

Rather than complete a degree at Boston College, Davies decided to become a professional after three years of college. He is an established professional prospect, and is expected to be a very high MLS draft draft he has chosen to accept the Adidas Generation contract he offered. Eventually, Davies decided to try his luck in Europe rather than signing a contract with Major League Soccer.

Hammarby

After a failed attempt at Dutch club Ajax, Davies signed his first professional contract with Allsvenskan Hammarby IF in December 2006. Although he was originally placed in the starting lineup, he struggled to finish and spent his first year with the club alternating between being a starter and a substitute. On 24 June 2007, Davies scored his first goal for the club, which was the decisive goal in Hammarby's game against Faroese Klaksvik in the first round of the 2007 Intertoto Cup, but he still could not score at Allsvenskan. Davies praised his coach, Tony Gustavsson, and Uruguayan star and former teammate Hammarby SebastiÃÆ'¡n Eguren by guiding his work ethic and attitude through his struggle. In the final match of the 2007 season, Davies got away and scored a hat-trick against GAIS.

The 2008 season was a major breakthrough for Davies. He scored fourteen goals in twenty-seven games, twenty-five of them starting. As a result of his strong performance in 2008 there were many rumors about his transfer to bigger clubs elsewhere in Europe, but in the end nothing was realized, and Davies returned to Hammarby.

The 2009 season started well for Davies, who scored four goals in nine first league games. He also scored two extra goals in the 2009 Swedish Cup game against ÃÆ'â € | tvidaberg, a nine-nine-minute equalizer and the winning goal just before the extra time expired, to encourage his club to a 3-2 victory in the third round of the tournament.

In the ninth league game of the season, however, he was issued a five-match suspension after he elbowed one of his opponents, the defender à ¢ â, "Michael AlmebÃÆ'¤ck rebelled in the face, producing a bloody mouth. Davies then left Sweden to join the U.S. national team, marking his last appearance with Hammarby.

Sochaux

On 10 July 2009, before returning from his suspension in Sweden, it was announced that Davies would sign a contract with Ligue 1 Sochaux club. On August 15, in his second match with Sochaux, Davies came on as a second-half substitute and scored twice; Sochaux eventually lost the game against Bordeaux, 3-2. However, after only eight appearances with the club, Davies was seriously injured in a car accident while in the United States. On 26 April 2010, Davies returned to full training with his club and eventually placed on the gameday list for the December 19 match against Bordeaux.

After spending the year 2011 on loan to D.C. United, Davies returns to Sochaux. He made his first appearance since the crash in a 1-0 loss against Rennes on 11 February 2012.

D.C. Unite

After a ten-day evaluation period with the club during pre-season, Davies signed a loan with D.C. United for MLS 2011 season. Davies made his debut as a substitute in the 52nd minute, against the Columbus Crew on 19 March 2011 by scoring two goals. A week later he scored his third goal in a 2-1 defeat against New England, and, on May 4, led MLS to score with six goals scored. On June 24, Davies was fined $ 1,000 for diving. On September 11, Davies scored a hat-trick of three assists from Chris Pontius to beat Chivas USA 3-0 in California. The win put United into tenth place in the standings, the last playoff spot, just above the New York Red Bulls. United announced on December 1, 2011 that they will not use the December 1 option to secure their permanent transfer from Sochaux. After the loan period at D.C. United, Davies talked about the disappointing season of the club and said he was involved in a dispute with the club's coaching staff.

Rander

At the end of the season, Davies is on the verge of leaving Sochaux after reaching an agreement to terminate the contract with rumors spreading that he is on his way to join AZ and his teammate in America Jozy Altidore but this was rejected by technical director, Earnie. Stewart, who insisted that the club was not interested in Davies. Eventually, Davies signed for the Danish side Randers on a two-year contract. Davies made his debut for the club, coming on as a substitute, in a 1-0 win over the OB on July 22, 2012. He has since not made his first start in the league, having played in the Danish Cup third round in a 2-1 win over NÃÆ'Â|stved and spent time there without scoring.

New England Revolution

On August 8, 2013, Davies is loaned to the New England Revolution for the rest of the 2013 MLS season. In early 2014, Davies and Randers agreed to terminate his contract, allowing him to join New England permanently.

Philadelphia Union

On 3 August 2016, New England traded Davies and selected the third round at the 2018 SuperDraft MLS to Philadelphia Union in return for a first-round election in SuperDraft 2018, general allocation money, and targeted money allocation.

Davies was released from Union at the end of the 2017 season.

Davies announced his retirement from playing football on March 2, 2018.

International

Youth

Davies played ten matches, mostly as a substitute, for the United States men's U-20 national soccer team, but did not make a list for the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship. He is the last player to be cut off the Youth Championship list. However, the U-20 team will include him on the list for the Elite Milk Cup competition a month later. He led the team to the final where he scored a hat-trick, making him a competitive MVP and giving the US to the US Cup, his first success. Davies further focuses on the U-23 national team as his next target for international play. He then trained and played with the team, eventually making a list for the men's tournament at the 2008 Summer Olympics. As a member of the US men's Olympic team, he made only one appearance in three matches played by the United States team at the Olympics. He came on as a substitute in the team's last game against Nigeria, where he almost tied the game when his header hit the crossbar in fading moments, which would send the team through to the knockout stage if the team went into goal.

Senior

He made his debut for the senior national team on 2 June 2007, in lieu of a 4-1 friendly win over China in San Jose, California. Later that summer he was part of the squad who took part in the 2007 Copa Amà © rica in Venezuela. On October 15, 2008, he scored his first national team goal in a 2-1 defeat to Trinidad and Tobago during the third round of CONCACAF qualifiers for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He added his second national team goal against Egypt in the final group stage match of the 2009 Confederations Cup. next against Spain, Davies was involved in the opening goal of his strike Jozy Altidore. On 12 August 2009, Davies scored the opening goal in a 2-1 defeat to Mexico in Mexico City, becoming the only fourth American to score against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium.

Davies was left out of the US list for the 2010 FIFA World Cup after he was not medically clarified by French club team Sochaux.

Personal

On June 29, 2012, Davies married his girlfriend, Nina. They now live in Hingham, Massachusetts.

Car crash

On October 13, 2009, Davies, who was in Washington, DC for the World Cup Qualifiers against Costa Rica, was a passenger in an SUV that went out of control of the George Washington Parkway and struck a metal fence around 3:15 am, ripped the vehicle in half. The accident shut the George Washington Parkway until 8:15 that morning. The accident killed a 22-year-old woman in a car with Davies, while Davies himself suffered from a bladder, a fractured right tibia and a thigh bone, cracked elbows, multiple facial fractures, and cerebral hemorrhage. In an interview with ESPN Jeremy Schaap on December 4, Davies said that he is expected to run in March and be fit to play in the World Cup. On January 25, 2010, ESPNsoccernet reported Davies was jogging and hoping to return to Sochaux in April. Davies returned to France to complete rehabilitation with his club on 17 February 2010, with plans to begin full team training within a month. He continued his light training with the club on 22 March. On May 11, it was announced by coach Bob Bradley that Davies will not be on the preliminary national team list for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, because Sochaux has not cleaned it medically.

Two years after the accident, Davies filed a $ 20 million lawsuit against Das Enterprises, which operates the Shadow Room, and Red Bull North America, which hosts private events where alcohol is served. The parent of the woman who died in the accident also filed a lawsuit against the nightclub owner and Red Bull in US District Court in Alexandria, Virginia.

Diagnosis of cancer

In the Spring of 2016, Davies was diagnosed with liposarcoma.
