James Whittington "Jimbo" Elrod (May 25, 1954 - December 12, 2016) is an American football midfielder who is All-American at the University of Oklahoma and plays professionally for Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Oilers of the National Football League.
Elrod graduated from East Central High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1972 and became a member of the 1974 and 1975 National Championship soccer teams. Elrod gained an honorary All-America consensus in 1975 when he had 20 tackles for losses. 44 of his work for a career lead loss list at the University of Oklahoma until 2001 (now stands as the sixth best of all time).
Elrod starred in the 1976 Orange Bowl victory 14-6 over the University of Michigan which secured Sooners the fifth national championship. The Oklahoma defense allows only 202 yards total in the game. He was composed by Kansas City Chief in the 5th round (overall 144) of the 1976 NFL Draft where he played three seasons and in 1979 he played a season with Oilers.
He earned a double scholarship to the University of Oklahoma where he was a member of the 1974 National Wrestling team. Elrod earned degrees in Public Relations and Business Administration and after an NFL career he worked in Personal Health Care Business and also as radio hosting and analysis.
Elrod later hosted a radio talk show at KOKC (AM) 1520, the main station for the University of Oklahoma located in Oklahoma City.
Elrod was killed in a car accident on December 12, 2016.
