Life and careers

1971-1990: Little

Lopes was born in 1971 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, daughter of Wanda Denise (nÃÆ' Â © e Andino), a tailor, and Ronald Lopes Sr., a staff sergeant of the US Army, He of Cape Verdean, Portuguese & African American descent. He has a younger brother, Ronald Jr., and a younger sister, Raina Anitra (who professionally runs by Reigndrop). Lopes said his father was "very strict, very dominating" and that he treated the family like they were in a "training camp". He is also a "talented musician" and plays harmonica, clarinet, piano, and saxophone.

Lopes's parents parted when he was still at school, and he was raised by his father's paternal grandmother for the last years of his childhood. He started playing with a toy keyboard at the age of five, and then composed his own songs. At the age of 10, he formed The Lopes Kids musical trio with his brothers, who sang gospel songs at local events and churches. She studied at Philadelphia High School for Girls.

1990-1998: TLC

At the age of 19, after hearing the casting call open to a new girl group through his girlfriend, Lopes moved to Atlanta to audition. Originally started as a female trio called 2nd Nature, the group changed its name to TLC, derived from the first initials of its members at the time: Tionne, Lisa and Crystal. Things did not work with Crystal Jones, and TLC manager Perri "Pebbles" Reid brought backup dancer Damian Dame Rozonda Thomas as the third member of the group. To retain the band's original name, Rozonda needed a name that began with C, and became Chilli, the name chosen by Lopes. Bandmate Tionne Watkins became T-Boz, derived from the first letter of his first name and "Boz" (slang for "boss"). Lopes was given the name "Left Eye" after the praise of a man who once told him that he was attracted to him because of his left eye. Lopes emphasized his nickname by wearing sunglasses with a left lens covered with a condom, in accordance with the group's secure sex promotion, wearing a black line under his left eye, and finally pierced his left eyebrow.

The group arrived in the music scene in 1992 with the album Ooooooohhh... At Ujung TLC . With four singles, it sold six million copies worldwide, leading to the group being a household name. Two years later CrazySexyCool was released, selling over 23 million copies worldwide, and cemented TLC as one of the greatest women's groups of all time. TLC's third album, FanMail , was released in 1999 and sold over 14 million copies worldwide. The title is a tribute to loyal TLC fans and his arm contains the names of hundreds of them as "thank you".

During the recording of FanMail , public conflicts begin among group members. In the May 1999 edition of Vibe , Lopes said, "I've graduated from this era, I can not stand 100 percent behind this TLC project and the music that should represent me." In response to Lopes' comments, Watkins and Thomas told Entertainment Weekly that Lopes "did not respect the whole group" and "Left Eye only cares about the Left Eye." In response, Lopes sent a reply via Entertainment Weekly which issued a "challenge" to Watkins and Thomas to release a solo album and let the public decide who the "biggest" TLC members are:

I challenged Tionne Watkins (T-Boz) and Rozonda Thomas (Chilli) to an album called "The Challenge"... a 3-CD set containing three solo albums. Every [album]... will belong to record label on October 1, 2000... I also challenge Dallas 'The Manipulator' Austin to produce all the material and do it at a fraction of its normal value. As I think about it, I'm sure LaFace would not mind throwing a $ 1.5 million prize for the winner.

T-Boz and Chilli refused to accept the challenge, though Lopes always maintained it was a great idea. Everything was heated among women for some time, with Thomas speaking out against Lopes, calling his "selfish," "evil," and "heartless" antics. TLC then overcame these fights by saying that they are very similar to sisters who have their occasional disapproval and then as Lisa says, "It's deeper than working relationships. We have feelings for each other, which is why we're so angry at each other. I usually say that you can not hate someone unless you love them, so we love each other, that's the problem. "

1998-2002: Solo Career

In 1998, Lopes hosted a short MTV series, The Cut, in which a handful of pop stars, rapper, and rock bands aspire to compete against each other in front of the jury. The event winner, who eventually became a male-female rap duo named Silky, promised a record deal and funding to produce a music video, which would then enter MTV's heavy rotation. Anastacia then unknown finished in third place, but eventually secured a record deal after Lopes and three judges were impressed by his performance.

After the release of FanMail , Lopes began to expand his solo career. She became the lead rapper on several singles, including Spice Girl Melanie C "Never Be the Same Again", which topped the charts in 35 countries, including Britain. He also appeared on "U Know What's Up", the first single from Donell Jones's second album, Where I Want to Be , and he tapped a verse on "Space Cowboy" with NSYNC on their 2000 album. , No Strings Attached . On October 4, 2000, Lopes hosted the MOBO Awards in the UK with Trevor Nelson, where he also performed "U Know What's Up" with Jones. He also collaborated on "Gimme Some" by Toni Braxton for his 2000 album The Heat. She previously appeared in Keith Sweat's song "How Do You Like It". In 2001, he appeared in an ad for Gap. In July 2001, Lopes appeared in the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire with Joey McIntyre, Tyrese, Nick Lachey and Lee Ann Womack. He dropped the $ 125,000 question and won $ 32,000 for his charity. After his death in 2002, the episode he presented was shown and dedicated to him.

Lopes created "Left Eye Productions" to discover new talent. He guides the R & amps trio B Blaque trio, and helped them secure a record deal with Columbia Records. Their self-titled debut album is an executive produced by Lopes, who also made cameo appearances in their music video "808" and also tapped in their second music video "I Do". Lopes also developed and promoted another new band called Egypt. They work with Lopes on their second album with a new nickname, N.I.N.A. , which means New Identity Not Applicable.

In 1996, Lopes created UNI Studios for the purpose of recording solo projects. The Lopes family opened the studio to the public. His brother Ronald is general manager of the studio. Lopes dreamed of making new artist can record music at low cost, in the upscale studio at home. His family continues to operate it and fill it with new equipment.

Supernova

Lopes spent much of his free time after completing TLC's first horn tour, FanMail Tour, recording his debut solo album, Supernova . This includes a song titled "A New Star is Born", dedicated to his late father. She told MTV News:

The song is dedicated to all those who have loved ones who have died. It says that there is no such thing as death. We can call it transformation because of the lack of better words, but as scientists would say, 'Every atom once a star is now in you.' It's in your body. So, in that song I pretty much followed the idea.... I do not care what happens or what people think about death, it does not matter. We all share the same space.

Other tracks include other personal issues, including his relationship with NFL football player Andre Rison. In 1994, before the start of Rison's fifth and final season with Falcons, Lopes accidentally set fire to Rison's big house in Atlanta. Among the 13 album tracks is also a posthumous duet with Tupac Shakur collected from a large cache of unreleased recordings made before his murder in 1996. Originally scheduled for release on the date coincides with the 11th anniversary of the death of his grandfather, Arista. The record decided to postpone and then cancel the American release. The album was finally released in August 2001 in various foreign countries. Japanese imports include a bonus track called "Friends", which will then be sampled for "Give It to Me While It's Hot" on TLC's fourth album 3D .

3D after he died. Another song, "Too Street 4 T.V" (featuring Danny Boy), was released on the 2003 movie soundtrack Dysfunktional Family .

2008: anumenis honorary album

Personal life

Lopes is often vocal about his personal life and his difficult past. She easily admits that she comes from a cruel alcohol background and struggles with her own alcoholism. These issues made headlines in 1994, when he burned Andre Rison's tennis shoes in the bathtub, which eventually spread to the big house where they shared and destroyed him. He claims that Rison has beaten him after a night out, and he burns his shoes to repay him, but burning the house is an accident. Lopes later revealed that he did not have much freedom in relationships and Rison tortured him emotionally and physically; he said that he let go of his frustration about the relationship on the night of the fire.

Lopes was sentenced to five years' probation and therapy at a halfway house, and could never shake the incident from his reputation. His relationship with Rison continued to make headlines, with rumors of an imminent marriage, later denied by People's magazine. Lopes revealed on The Last Days of Left Eye documentary that his encounter with a mother struggling in rehab made a big impression on her. He then adopted the eight-year-old daughter. He had adopted a 12-year-old boy ten years earlier.

Lopes has several tattoos. The most prominent was the large eagle on his left arm, which he said represented freedom. Then, he adds the number "80" around the eagle, which is Rison's NFL number while in Atlanta. She also has a moon tattoo with a face on her feet referring to Rison's nickname, "Bad Moon". In the upper right arm there is a large tattoo with the name "Parron" for his half brother who died in a boat accident, arched over a large tattoo that pierced the heart. The smallest tattoo is in his left ear and consists of an arrow pointing to the left of the eye symbol, a reference to his nickname.

About two weeks before his own death, Lopes was a passenger in a traffic accident that resulted in the death of a 10-year-old Honduran boy. As reported in Philadelphia Weekly , "It is common for people to walk on roads across Honduras, and it is often difficult to see pedestrians." The boy, Bayron Isaul Fuentes Lopez, followed behind his brother and sister as he stepped off the middle lane and was hit by a van driven by Stephanie, Lopes' personal assistant. Lopes stopped and put the boy in the car, and Lopes "cuddled the dying man's bleeding head in his arms" while "someone gave him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation as they hurried to take him to the nearest hospital." He died the next day. Lopes paid about $ 3,700 for his medical expenses and funeral, and he gave the family about $ 925 for an additional fee, although it seemed agreed by the authorities and the children's family that his death was "an unexpected tragedy" and no mistakes were placed on the van driver or Lopes. In the documentary The Last Days of Left Eye, Lopes was shown picking a crate for a child from a local funeral home. Earlier in the documentary, Lopes mentioned that he felt the presence of the "spirit" that followed him, and was struck by the fact that the child killed in the accident shared the same last name, even thinking that the spirit might have made the mistake of taking his life not his.

Death and inheritance

On April 25, 2002, in La Ceiba, Honduras, while riding a rented Mitsubishi Montero SUV, Lopes swerved to avoid a truck (it was unclear whether the truck was slow or stationary) then immediately to the right as he tried to avoid the approaching car. The vehicle rolled over several times after crashing into two trees, throwing Lopes and three others out the window, and finally resting in a ditch on the side of the road. Lopes died instantly with severe head injuries and head injuries, and the only person seriously injured in the crash. He is 30 years old. A camera man in the front passenger seat was recording a video at the time, so the last seconds leading to a turn that resulted in a fatal accident were recorded in the video. His sister Reigndrop Lopes was in the vehicle and survived the crash.

The Lopes Cemetery was held at the Baptist Church of the Born of the New Baptist in Lithonia, Georgia, on May 2, 2002. Thousands of people attended. Engraved on the casket is the lyric of his "Waterfall" section, stating "Dreams are hopeless ideals, in hopes of becoming reality, believe in yourself, the rest is up to me and you." Lopes is buried at Hillandale Memorial Gardens in Lithonia.

In a statement to MTV, producer Jermaine Dupri remembers Lopes: "He is determined to be something in life He is a true rock star He does not care about no press He is a rock star of a group He is one who will condemn TV He has a tattoo, you can expect the unexpected. When you see Lisa, you can expect something from her. That is the gift she brings. "

A documentary showing the last 27 days of Lopes's life, entitled The Last Day of the Left, aired at the Atlanta Film Festival in April 2007, for an audience that included many people of Lopes's age, including Monica. , Ronnie DeVoe, 112, Big Boi, India.Arie, and CeeLo Green. VH1 and VH1 Soul broadcast the documentary on May 19, 2007. Most of the footage was taken with hand-held cameras, often in the form of a diary entry filmed by Lopes during a 30-day spiritual retreat in Honduras with Reigndrop sister Ronald's brother and a member of the R & amp; B Egypt. In this entry, he reflects on his personal life and career. The quieter side of his personality is on display, showing interest in numerology and yoga. He is in the process of setting up an educational center for Honduran children on 80 hectares (32 ha) of land he owns called CAMP YAC, as well as another center called CREATIVE CASTLE.

In 2003, shortly after the death of Lopes, his family started the Lisa Lopes Foundation, a charitable group dedicated to providing abandoned and abandoned youth with the resources necessary to improve their quality of life. His spiritual motto is the motto used for his foundation: "Energy never dies... it just changes." The foundation goes to the various villages left behind and provides new clothes to needy children and their families. In August 2007, the foundation organized a charity auction, selling items donated by celebrities. It raised about $ 5,000 for Hogar de Amor ("Love House"), an orphanage in Honduras. In 2012, the foundation began organizing an annual music festival, known as the "Left Eye Music Fest", in Decatur, Georgia.
