Tesoro High School is a public high school in the southern area of ââOrange County in Las Flores, California. Founded in the fall of 2001, Tesoro is 1 of 6 regular secondary schools in the Capistrano integrated school district. In 2014-2015 years, Tesoro serves nearly 2500 students in grades 9-12. Students attending Tesoro are inside the town of Rancho Santa Margarita, Las Flores, Ladera Farm, Coto de Caza and Mission Viejo.

In 2013, Newsweek's "Upper School of the American Public" ranked Tesoro as the number 337 of the 1,300 national high schools. This makes it, in 2013, the highest ranking in the school district. In 2008, Tesoro was the second highest in the district, while in 2007 was ranked third. By 2015, the Tesoro Performing Arts Department (orchestra, band, and choir) is one of the main competitors to compete for the Grammy. Now, they are known as Grammy Signature School.
The Tesoro High School Chamber Orchestra was conducted for the State Music Listener Conference in Sacramento and, together with the Wind Ensemble, was conducted at Carnegie Hall in April 2007.
Tesoro's choir music department under the leadership of Keith Hancock has also been recognized as one of the top choir programs in Southern California, selected as Grammy Signature School for Excellence 2015 (one in five in the country) and has accepted an invitation to perform in 2012 and 2016 American Choral Directors Association Western Conference Division. In 2013, Tesoro's Madrigal performed the world premiere of Un Tesoro Perfecto , by composer Luke Mayernik, at Carnegie Hall in New York. The Tesoro Madrigals won the Golden State South Choral Competition in 2008 and A Cappella won in 2010. In 2005, 2010 and 2011, Tesoro's Barbershop Quartet placed first in the Barbershop Harmony Society's Far Western District High School Quartet Championship. The choir has done much in all of Southern California, as well as Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, England, Ireland and Mexico. The choir never received less than the superior ratings at a decided festival. By 2017, from over 3,300 national nominations, choir director Keith Hancock is a recipient of the 2017 Music Educator Award and named Grammy Educator of the Year, presented by The Recording Academy and GRAMMY Foundation.
The art department of Tesoro High School, under the leadership of Cheryl Des Palmes, is recognized as one of the top drama programs in California. In 2004 and 2005, the theater department of Tesoro High School won many CAPPIES awards. In 2013 Legally Blonde: The Musical won for Best Musical, Best Orchestra, Best Feature Actor in Musical, and Best Comedic Actress in a Musical, among about 30 nominations. Athletics
Tesoro High School Varsity's football team beat Western High School in 2004 to clinch their first division title. In 2005, Titans became the Back-To-Back Division IX CIF Champions after beating Northwood High School for the second time that season.
Tesoro was transferred to the more competitive South Coast League for sport in the 2006 academic year. Although the 2004 and 2005 football teams have beaten several teams from the top division schools, including Dana Hills, Foothill, Kennedy and Laguna Hills, and the '04 and ' 05 was among the top 10 high school soccer teams in Orange County, the team placed last in the league in 2006, after losing key players including Aaron Wilcox, Donald Miller, Josh Williams, Sean Calcagnie, Todd Sciacqua, Jason Johnson, Trevor Lozon, Sam Smith, Garrett Beck and Josh Mitchell from the CIF Championship team.
However, in the second season in Division I the Titan soccer team won the South Coast League Championship, playing unbeaten in the league in 2007, and defeating Mission Viejo and San Clemente. Today, their football head coach is Matt Poston.

Tennis Girls' won the South Coast in 2006 and ended the season ranking in the top ten OC.
In 2004, women's soccer team Tesoro won their first CIF victory with a 1-0 win over Buena High School. Again In 2006, the Varsity Soccer School team of Tesoro High School was tied up with San Marcos High School to divide the Second Division Championship.
Tesoro High School Aquatics also has an award winning Swim Team and Polo Air Men and Women as part of its water sports program. Water Polo Girls managed to reach the playoff SS-CIF 2007 in the second division. This is the first water polo team from Tesoro Girls who made it to CIF.
Tesoro Aquatics High School The Women's Swimming Team, led by Coach Todd Conrad, is unbeaten in 4 years (2014-2017) of the South Coast League action which earns 4 straight League titles. During that period the CIF rating of "Lady Titans" has increased every year from 8 in 2014, 3 in 2015, 3 in 2016 and runner up in 2017 making Tesoro the highest public high school in Southern Califorina . By 2016, the Lady Titans team is ranked first in Orange County, defeating their number one opponent, Santa Margarita Catholic School on Relay Capo. Famous CIF swimmers during this period included Jessica Epps (2018) currently qualifying for the 2016 Olympics with 8 out of 11 school records, 3 times USA Swimming's Schoolastic All American and 4 times NISCA All American and 4 times All County recipient, Mandy Barnes (Class 2015), Jami Hwang (2017), Dominque Gray (2017), Victoria Epps (2017), Rhys Empey (2017), Emily Baker (2018), Ashley Joe (2018), Malia Mills (2020), Lauren Stevens (2020).
2011- 2017 The cross-country team of players has been eligible for CIF SS Finals 7 years in a row. In 2013 and 2014, Tesoro men are eligible for the CIF Country Championship .
Women's volleyball team placed fifth in the league in the 2007 season will be 3-7.
The women's tennis team continues to be the top team, taking second place in the league for the 2007 season.
The 2008-2009 school year brought many results to the sports teams in Tesoro. Varsity football won the South Coast League title, for the second year in a row. To get there, they must beat their rivals from Mission Viejo Middle School for the second year in a row. They went on to make it to the CIF Southern Section championship game at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, and lost to Long Beach Polytechnic High School.
In 2009, Tesoro High School saw perhaps the best student class they ever had. The team went 10-0 and won the South Coast League Title for the new students. The highlight of the season was a 56-6 victory over San Clemente High School.
The 2009 season also brought many new students to Girls' Varsity Cross Country Team. The new student team won the Laguna Hills Invitational and placed second at Great Oak High School. The university team is also first placed in Woodbridge and Mt. Bag. For the first time in school history, the team advanced to a CIF preview with in a big place and qualified for the CIF finals.
The university basketball team in 2009 also has a remarkable season. They became champions of the South Coast League, and also went to the CIF Southern Section championship at the Honda Center where they beat Ventura High School. They went on to the second round of state championships where they lost to Martin Luther King Secondary School.
Academics
According to the California Department of Education's Policy and Evaluation Division, the API score of Tesoro High School in 2008 was 836, a growth of 21 points from the year 2007 of 815. There are 2071 students included in this API score.
Facilities
Tesoro is the newest secondary school in CUSD. Tesoro opened in 2001 serving Las Flores, Rancho Santa Margarita, Ladera Farm, Coto de Caza, and Dove Canyon.
The modern school is built on a canyon at the end of a 241 highway between Las Flores and Coto de Caza on the southern Oso Parkway. The school is about 14 miles (23 km) from the Pacific Ocean.
Tesoro has two baseball fields, water sports facilities, a softball field, a soccer/soccer field (on one of the baseball field courts), eight tennis courts, and a soccer and track stadium. In 2006, the stadium was upgraded with synthetic grass and lanes to match the other high school districts. During the summer of 2014 and 2015, a group of Tesoro students painted most of the school hall, subject-themed and added a unique and vibrant atmosphere to the wall.
Tesoro High School has 20 portable classrooms that have been placed on what was once a black field and basketball. This is an attempt to overcome density in Tesoro. This is the third lowest number of high school districts after Capistrano Valley and San Juan Hills. Tesoro has 193, 11 square feet (1.0 m 2 ) in a permanent building and 19, 200 square feet (19 m 2 ) in a portable building. The two-story building is expected to replace the portable in Autumn 2016 or 2017. There are 212, 211 square feet (19.6m 2 ) at all on campus.
Extracurricular activities
In 2009, the Tesoro High School trials team won the Orange County Mock Trial Contest, the Constitution Foundation for the first time in school history. The team defeated Woodbridge High School, and went on to the state finals competition in San Jose, CA. In 2005 and 2011, they were regional finalists, losing to Woodbridge in the final on both occasions. In 2012, Tesoro's test team once again made it to the county final, but lost to Saddleback Christian Academy.
In 2014, Tesoro has more than 75 clubs, in addition to chapters from the National Honor Society, the California Scholarship Federation, and the Impact Freshman Transition Program. All extracurricular activities, including dance and graduation, are under the direction of the Associative Student Body.

In media
In 2005, two football star players, Scott McKnight and Sam Smith, were expelled for writing threats of explicit and graphic killings involving sexual acts. Students write journals for classroom assignments with which teachers, to whom they refer, are collected and then immediately notify school officials.
On June 19, 2008, it was reported that two students, Omar Khan and Tanvir Singh, went to school to steal tests and change their tests, and other values, by hacking into school computer networks. Both students are charged with multiple criminal offenses.
