Route description
In Pennsylvania, US 322 was signed as the 28th Division Highway, in honor of the 28th Infantry Division. The route into Pennsylvania takes a course northeast. In Meadville, US 322 overlaps with Route 6 US and US Routes 19. In Southeast Meadville, highways generally run southeast through Crawford, Venango, and County Clarion. After leaving the Clarion borough, US 322 exchanged I-80, at exit 70. From I-80, it continued on a crowded east-west route across Jefferson County. The route overlaps with Route 219 near the north terminal of US Route 119, south of Du Bois. East US 219, the route takes the turn south to cross the Moshannon State Forest, before taking the east-west line. From Clearfield to Route 220 US, the highway runs to the southeast and part is divided.
In the State College area, current alignment of 322 US overlaps Interstate 99 and US 220 for 12 miles (19 km) Northeast Port Matilda, Interstate 99, US 220, and US 322 depart from Appalachian Thruway through exchange and proceed eastward in Division Highway 28 while Thruway continues to the northeast as US 220 Alternate.
West of State College, the 28th Division Highway became the Mount Nittany Expressway after intersecting with Scotia Road and North Atherton Street (Business US 322, which passes downtown State College). I-99/US 220/US 322 overlap ends at a complex intersection north of downtown State College.
East overlap, US 322 continues to the southeast through State College and its immediate surroundings on the Mount Nittany Expressway. After three exits, US 322 returned to the highway two miles east of State College in Boalsburg, joining US 322 Business and proceeding east along Boal Avenue as an exit route from the State College area. Between Boalsburg and Lewistown, the highway crosses Mount Tussey and Stone Mountain, in the Rothrock State Forest, turning south.
Between Potters Mills and Lewistown, US 322 is a limited access road. Near Lewistown, it briefly overlaps US Route 522 and begins to overlap long with US 22. South Lewistown, US 22/US 322 enters Lewistown Narrows, a stretch of 8 miles (13 km) from the road through the Juneata River water gap in Shade Mountain. The construction to convert this section of the highway from a two-lane highway into an access-limited, four-lane access road was completed in December 2007, and included building the longest mechanically stable earth wall in the US Highway out of the hole at Arch Rock, Juniata County and Perry County, and across Tuscarora Mountain through the water gap in the southeast along the banks of the Juniata River. After crossing Susquehanna at the Clarks Ferry (coinciding with the Appalachian Trail), the highway runs south and parallels the river for 15 miles (24 km) before entering Harrisburg County.
In the north of downtown Harrisburg, the crossroads of 22/322 US overlap with Interstate 81 at exit 67. While 22 US continues through the exchange and headed downtown, US 322 departs 22 US and joins I-81 to the north. I-81 and US 322 remain simultaneously for three miles (5 km) for exit 70, where US 322 exits, following Interstate 83, which has a northern terminal at the intersection, south through the deepest outskirts of Harrisburg. After two exits, US 322 departs from I-83 at Eisenhower Interchange (exit 47), after east Paxton Street, back onto the highway after exit, towards Hummelstown. To the west of the city, US 322 became a highway once again, becoming Hummelstown Bypass after crossing Fiddlers Elbow Road. The route runs south of Hummelstown, interchanging with two local roads before meeting with Eastern Terminal of Pennsylvania Route 39 and west end of US Route 422 at the intersection between Hummelstown and Hershey.
When the highway ends (road ahead ahead as US 422), US 322 exits and heads east on West Governor's Road as it crosses south of Hershey. In the eastern Hershey area, the route runs east through the beautiful Horseshoe Pike across Lebanon County. The Pike Horse Poultice section ends west of Cornwall, where US 322 passes through the city (overlapping with PA 72). East bypass, the route becomes levels again, entering Lancaster County and passing the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76). This stretch runs eastward, again known as the 28th Division Highway. East Ephrata, US 322 intersection of US Route 222 and continue southeast through Pennsylvania Dutch Country in eastern Lancaster County, which is home to many Amish farms. In this area, route the PA 23 in Blue Ball, and then return to the Horseshoe Pike name before crossing PA 10 at Honey Brook after entering Chester County. In Downingtown, US 322 exchanged US 30. After passing under 30 US, proceeded to Downingtown as Manor Ave before cutting US 30 Business/Lancaster Ave. The route turns left at the intersection and concurrent US Business 30 for a temporary block across the Brandywine River. The route then turn right at the next intersection to Brandywine Ave as it exits the borough and becomes Downingtown Pike.
Where the highway approaches the West Chester area, it passes through the area via West Chester Bypass. At the end of an in-class neglect, the eastern path of 322 US joins the US Route 202 to the south to initiate overlap. After three exits, US 322/US 322 overlaps to a flat level leading north-south. South of West Chester, overlapping is the main highway that is shared in Chester County and then into Delaware County. In Concord City, US 322 veered east to Route 1 US and left the US Route 202 at Painters' Crossroad. One mile join US 1 east from US 202, US 322 leaving US 1 through a turn to the southeast to become Conchester Highway. Near Chester, the route has three exits (one with PA 452, Betel Road on the CSX rail line, and Highland Avenue) before starting overlap with Interstate 95, at exit 3A. The overlap with I-95 is short, where US 322 leaves I-95, at exit 4, and across the Delaware River to enter New Jersey via Commodore Barry Bridge.
