Route description
Illinois 29 runs near the right (down stream) the (north and west) Illinois River from Spring Valley to Peoria. Starting from US 6/Illinois 89 at the northern end of Spring Valley, the road passes through the small towns of Putnam and Henry, cutting Route 18 in Illinois at Henry. In Sparland, Illinois 29 cuts Route 17 Illinois. Then walk under a cliff at Hopewell before it becomes 4th Street, the main north-south artery through Chillicothe.
From the northern end of the Illinois Route 6 in southern Mossville through Peoria and Peoria Heights, Route 29 is named Galena Road until it crosses the 150 US Route on the McClugage Bridge and merges with the US Route 24 of the bridge; from there the street was named Adams Street. In the south of downtown in Peoria, 29 split from US 24 to Cedar Street Bridge, where it crosses the Illinois River to East Peoria with Illinois Route 8 and Illinois Route 116.
At the east end of Cedar Street Bridge, Routes 8 and 116 move north on East Peoria's Main Street, and Route 29 goes south, entering the Creve Coeur on Main Street and providing intersections with Interstate 474. Entering Pekin as 8th Street and forks off as 5th Street before a short concurrency with Illinois Route 9 near Pekin Bridge. Splitting to 2nd Street (southbound) and 3rd Street (north) before crossing the bridge, Route 29 exits Pekin as 2nd Street, past Federal Penitentiary, Pekin, and from there substantially directly south through Mason City to Springfield.
Route 29 enters Springfield at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport, and runs on the north and east sides of the city. After leaving Springfield at the intersection with Interstate 72/US. Route 29, Route 29 runs southeast through Taylorville, passes the end of Route 104 Illinois and crosses Illinois Route 48, then ends on the US Route Route Route 51/Illinois 16 in Pana.

History
Route 29 was founded in 1918, and ran from DePue to Peoria. It was extended twice over Illinois Route 24 in 1936 and 1940, and in 1942 replaced the long-running US Routes 6 of the Bureau Junction to Spring Valley.
Future
Illinois' Rte. 29 has long been established as one of the roads to be upgraded as part of the Peoria-to-Chicago Highway. Although there are no more funded plans to build toll roads, there are plans to try to reduce congestion in Illinois 29 by extending it from a narrow two-lane highway to a four-lane highway.
In September 2001, the Illinois Department of Transport (IDOT) initiated the Illinois Study 29 to determine a viable upgrade path for this corridor.
The Illinois study 29 covers Route 29 of Interstate 180 across the Illinois River from Hennepin, south to Illinois Route 6 in Mossville.
Throughout most of this stretch, the road is a striped highway, two lanes (one northbound, one southbound). At Chillicothe, the speed limit is reduced to 35 mph (56 km/h), although there are now four lanes (two to the north, two to the south). Truck traffic is relatively heavy along this stretch, as various industrial plants are located in the cities.
Proposed solution
IDOT is considering a shortcut west of Henry, Sparland, Hopewell, and Chillicothe. It's called "Bluff Alternate" because the highway will be relocated (south of Putnam) to the cliff overlooking the Illinois River. Another alternative that is still under consideration is simply to increase the road through Hopewell and Sparland to the divided four-lane highway.
Several other considerations have been drawn, including bypass east of Putnam.
All solutions result in an extension of the Illinois 6 route to meet the new Illinois 29 north of Peoria.
