Plot
In the novel, Dawson Cole returns to his hometown for the first time in twenty years to fulfill the last wish of his best friend and stepfather, Tuck Hostetler. When he arrived, Dawson was surprised to find that Tuck had arranged for Dawson's high school boyfriend, Amanda, to join him in meeting this last hope. In fact, it soon became clear that Dawson and Amanda looked at each other again and perhaps reviving their old romantism was the main purpose of Tuck's last wish. However, Amanda is married and the Dawson family, a group of notorious criminals, pose a danger that can change not only Tuck's plans but Dawson's future can not be undone.
Dawson Cole works on an oil rig off the coast of Louisiana. One day the rig in the rig almost took over Dawson's life, but strangers in the water showed Dawson where to go, saving his life. Later months, Dawson learned about the death of his best friend, Tuck Hostetler. Dawson hurried home to see Tuck's last hope even though he had not returned home in twenty years.
Dawson was born into a notorious criminal family, allowed to escape many small crimes because of the city's fear of the family. Dawson is not like his family, but no one really believes that a Cole can be honest or law-abiding. For this reason, Dawson lives isolated in his hometown. As a child, Dawson tries to stay within the bounds of the law and is repeatedly beaten and abused by most of his family, more particularly his father Tommy Cole and two older cousins ââAbee and Crazy Ted. When he was sixteen, Dawson left his father's home and began living in the garage of a local mechanic, Tuck Hostetler. Tuck, who had just lost his wife, let Dawson stay, a relationship that would end the rest of Tuck's life.
At the end of his teenage years, Dawson became a lab partner with Amanda Collier, daughter of a prominent family. They soon fall in love and begin dating for several years, though this tension causes Amanda with her parents. When high school graduation came and Amanda had to make a choice between college and Dawson, Dawson forced her to choose school. Shortly thereafter, Dawson was involved in an accident in which the truck he was driving attacked and killed a local doctor, David Bonner. Dawson pleaded guilty to the allegations, even though it was just an accident. Dawson served a four-year prison term and his parole alive with Tuck. During his parole, Dawson's father and cousin, Ted, arrived at Tuck's garage one day to raise money from Dawson, but Dawson beat them with a crowbar and warned them never to return. When he was finally released from his parole, Dawson left town and never looked back.
During Dawson's absence from his hometown, a terrible situation began to happen at Coles's residence. Crazy Ted was arrested for attacking a man in a bar and served nine years behind bars. Dawson's father, Tommy, died of an alcohol-poisoning overdose, and the authorities began to watch Coles closely because there was something fishy that would involve them.
When Dawson arrives at Tuck's, he is surprised to find Amanda there. Amanda has made friends with Tuck in the last few years of her life and for this reason was called by Tuck's lawyer after her death. Amanda and Dawson talked for a while, even dinner together at Tuck's house, before parting. When Amanda returns home to her mother, her mother taught her about her relationship with Dawson and how it looks, especially since Amanda is a married woman. Amanda's mother, however, did not realize that Amanda had become disillusioned in her marriage because of her husband's alcoholism after the death of their daughter, Bea.
The next day, Amanda and Dawson visit Tuck's lawyer and find out that they have to spread the ashes in the cabin she and her wife have. This means another full day together. Amanda and Dawson had lunch together and discussed their plans. When Amanda comes home, Dawson remains at Tuck to fix Tuck's car while she dies. When Dawson worked, he did not realize that his cousin, Crazy Ted, followed him with plans to kill him because of the beatings he had received from Dawson years ago. When Crazy Ted sneaks into Tuck's, Dawson sees the same man he sees the day of the oil rig blast and chases him through the forest. This caused Dawson to find Crazy Ted's truck and find out the danger. Dawson confronts Crazy Ted, beat him and returns him to the family compound. In retaliation for his failed attempt to kill Dawson, Crazy Ted recruited his brother Abe, who planned his own revenge against Dr. Bonner, Alan, for dating his girlfriend, Candy, a beautiful young bartender.
The next day, Dawson and Amanda go to Tuck's cabin and learn from a letter written by Tuck about his love affair with his wife. It inspired Dawson and Amanda, as Tuck had clearly expected, and they spent the night alone together. The next day, Amanda made a painful decision to return to her family. Dawson prepares to leave town, but returns to Tuck when he remembers that he left a letter Tuck wrote to her there. When Dawson enters the city, he again sees the strange man who rescued him after an oil rig explosion. Dawson followed this man to a bar where he found the young doctor he had killed leading him to rescue his now grown son, from Dawson's dead cousin Abee and Crazy Ted Cole. Dawson rescues the young man, but is killed when Crazy Ted shoots his head. At the same time, Amanda's son had an accident and needed a heart transplant. The next day, Amanda is informed of Dawson's death and she grieves for her loss.
Two years have passed since Dawson's tragic death. Amanda and Frank have repaired their broken marriage, though it is no longer as romantic or relaxing as in previous years. Dawson's cousins, Abee and Crazy Ted were arrested and put in jail for killing Dawson. Amanda's son is happy and healthy with her new heart and questions Amanda on the anniversary of her accident if it is possible to track the donor and thank her family. Amanda, who knew that her son had received Dawson's heart, after investigating the death of Dawson, told him that it was made anonymous for a reason. She holds him tightly to tell him that he loves her, which is meant for both Dawson whose heart is beating inside of her as well as her son.
