Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant is a nuclear power plant located north of the town of Bridgman, Michigan which is part of Berrien County, on an area of 650 hectares (260 ha) 11 miles south of St. James. Joseph, Michigan, United States. The plant is owned by American Electric Power (AEP) and is operated by Indiana Michigan Power, a subsidiary of AEP. It has two nuclear reactors and is currently the only nuclear power plant company.

The cost of power plant construction is $ 3.352 billion (2007 USD). The plant produces 2.2 GW of electricity, enough to meet the needs of the city with 1.25 million people.

The plant is connected to a power grid through a 765 kV line that flows from the plant to the DuMont AEP substation near Lakeville, Indiana and by many 345 kV channels, two of which are connected to the Consumer Energy/METC, connecting with the Palisades Nuclear Power Station. , owned by Entergy.

Expiration and license renewal

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission renewed the operating licenses of both reactors on August 30, 2005. With renewal, the One Unit operating license will expire in 2034 while Unit Two will expire in 2037. The unit was originally licensed for forty years from their operational date.

Population Surrounding

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission defines two emergency planning zones around a nuclear power plant: exposure zone zone with a radius of 10 miles (16 km), mainly related to exposure, and inhalation, airborne radio contamination and consumption line lanes about 50 miles (80 km ), mainly related to the consumption of food and fluids contaminated by radioactivity.

US population in 2010 within 10 miles (16 km) of D.C. Cook is 54,638, up 3.4 percent in a decade, according to a US Census data analysis for msnbc.com. The US population of 2010 within 50 miles (80 km) is 1,225,096, an increase of 2.8 percent since 2000. Cities within 50 miles including South Bend, IN (26 miles to downtown), Michigan City, IN, St. Joseph, MI, and Kalamazoo, MI.

Visitor center

The plant has a visitor center open to the public six days a week based on decline. Since the September 11 attacks, the factory has only opened for school groups with reservations. The visitor center has a 26-foot (7.9 m) animation model that shows how the factory operates.

Incident

  • In 1976 two workers were killed in a recirculation hole (sump) by asphyxia of an inert argon gas used to support welding on stainless steel pipes.
  • July 13, 1990 One person died from electric shock and three others suffered severe burns due to a 4kv switchgear explosion.
  • In September, 1997, the two units were closed for approximately three years when, as a result of the NRC inspection in engineering, it became unclear whether the emergency core cooling system could perform the intended function in terms of accident design basis.
  • In 1998, the NRC enacted a $ 500,000 civil penalty for 37 violations of the regulation, mostly related to condensing ice containers used to respond to several accidental losses.
  • On May 12, 2002, Unit 2 was closed automatically due to excessive DC power supply failure in Reactor & amp; Instrumentation System. Due to inadequate corrective action, the same event occurred on February 5, 2003.
  • The transformer fire caused the automatic shutdown of Unit 1 in 2003 and the release of cooling oil to Lake Michigan.
  • Massive fishing caused both units to be manually switched off for several weeks on April 24, 2003. Due to the degradation of the Service's Important Water flow to the Diesel Emergency Plant Generator, the site entered an Emergency Plan at Warning Level. Standby out about 25 hours later.
  • On September 20, 2008, the main turbine and generator of unit 1 were damaged by severe turbine vibrations caused by damaged low-pressure turbine blades. Fire also broke out in Unit 1 generator. No radiation is released and Unit 2 continues to operate in full force.

Seismic risk

Estimated Nuclear Regulatory Commission's annual risk of earthquakes is strong enough to cause core damage to reactors in D.C. Cook is 1 at 83,333, according to an NRC study published in August 2010.
