Death

On August 16, 2010, at about 4:30, Ryan drove the 1995 Jeep Wrangler off a cliff on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California. Jeep landed on the rocks below and the Coast Guard initially tried to help him. Ryan was trapped in a vehicle and suffered a major head injury. Her dog Jill was thrown out of the vehicle, but survived with several minor injuries, including broken claws. The Ventura County Fire Department tried to raise Ryan by helicopter, but the effort was canceled when he was declared dead at the scene. Ryan had just posted a picture of his dog, and tweeted, "Border collie Jill watching the view from the top of the sand dunes". On October 21, 2010, the California Highway Patrol determined that an unsafe transition was the official cause of a car accident that killed Ryan.
