Jackknifing refers to the folding of the articulated vehicle to resemble the sharp corners of the folding knife. If a vehicle crashing into a trailer slips, the trailer can push the towing vehicle from behind until it turns the vehicle around and faces backwards. This may be caused by equipment failure, improper braking, or poor road conditions such as slippery road surfaces. In extreme circumstances, a driver may try to bend the vehicle intentionally to stop it after a brake failure.
