Jackknifing refers to the folding of the articulated vehicle to resemble the sharp corners of the folding knife. If a vehicle crashing into a trailer slips, the trailer can push the towing vehicle from behind until it turns the vehicle around and faces backwards. This may be caused by equipment failure, improper braking, or poor road conditions such as slippery road surfaces. In extreme circumstances, a driver may try to bend the vehicle intentionally to stop it after a brake failure. Multiple incidents from heavy vehicles can be fatal to the driver because the top of the cabin can be crushed or sliced ââas the swing swings hard and tries to fold under the trailer.

Swing trailer
When a trailer rolls off to one side, this is known as a trailer trailer or trailer trailer . This can happen on slippery road surfaces, often where there cant. This is not the same as "jackknifing" and not seriously because the trailer moves back to the line as the vehicle continues to advance. The driver should be aware, however, that the trailer can slide over parked cars or guard rails, or wheels can slide into the gutter. This situation can occur especially when trailers are empty or lightly loaded, and weather conditions cause strong winds.

Anti-folding
- One system with limited success is a device that mechanically limits the angle in which the trailer can swing.
- A much more successful system is to install a tractor with anti-lock brakes. Originally installed to aircraft in the 1950s, anti-lock brakes significantly reduced the number of heavy vehicle accidents.
- The distribution of electronic brake force varies pressure to the rear brake during heavy load or hard braking, increasing the driver control.
- Tractors are used to be fitted with a lever in the cab to operate the trailer brakes. Vehicles can be slowed or stop using trailer brakes only. Theoretically this is a sure way to prevent jackknifing, but this lever is often the cause of jackknifing by means of twisting. The frequent use of trailer brakes alone causes them to overheat and fade while the tractor brakes remain fresh. In case of an emergency stop, the driver will go straight for the foot brake and the truck will surely be curved because the tractor brake will be locked while the trailer brake will not be effective because it was previously too hot.
- The alternative to having a trailer brake lever in the cabin is to install a trailer with an electromagnetic brake.
