The accident occurred before dawn at 5:30 am on the southern route of the New England Thruway section on Interstate 95 on the border between the Bronx and Westchester County, New York. The bus returned to Chinatown, New York City from the Mohegan Sun casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. The bus turned and collided with a metal pole, which tore the bus and tore off most of its roof. Cause of accident
Crash condition
Several surviving passengers said that the driver, Ophadell Williams, fell asleep behind the wheel. He was not charged at first, waiting for an investigation. Williams said he was awake and awake at the time of the accident. The bus driver blamed the accident on a tractor-trailer that he swerved to avoid, causing the bus to overturn and hit a road sign that split the bus in two. He said the two might hit each other.
The accident triggered an investigation by the New York State Police and the National Transportation Safety Agency.
Initial NTSB findings
A preliminary report by NTSB in April 2011 found that the bus would be 78 miles per hour (126 km/h) at the time of the accident, 28 miles per hour faster than the posted 50 miles per hour (80 km/h) speed limit. The report found that the bus had exceeded the speed limit on I-95 45 seconds before turning off the highway. The report says that there is no evidence of contact between the bus and passing truck, as claimed by the driver. The truck driver was placed by the authorities, refused the bus driver account and was released from responsibility. State officials revoked the driver's right to drive the bus after the report became publicly aware of Williams's criminal record, which included having served time for murder and theft convictions.

Prosecution of Ophadell Williams
The driver, Ophadell Williams, was indicted by the Bronx County District Prosecutor's office with 54 counts of crime and offenses, including counts of arbitrary murder and arbitrary killings. Williams was detained from September 2011 until the end of his trial, as he was unable to meet the $ 250,000 guarantee requirement. On December 7, 2012, the jury found Williams innocent of all charges unless a single charge of minor offense exacerbated the unlicensed operation of the motor vehicle.
