Plot

Ma Hon Keung (Jackie Chan), a Hong Kong policeman, came to New York to attend his Uncle Bill's (Bill Tung) wedding. Uncle Bill owns a Wa-Ha Supermarket in The Bronx, an area with a high crime rate. He meets Bill Danny's (Morgan Lam) neighbor, an American-American boy, and his aunt-to-be Whitney (Carrie Cain Sparks), an African-American woman who works at Bill's supermarket. Bill tries to sell his supermarket, and he meets a potential buyer, Elaine (Anita Mui), who is reluctant to buy it for Bill's price. Nevertheless, Bill invites Elaine to his wedding, hoping there is still a chance to sell it. Unknown Keung & amp; Elaine, Bill's market proved to be a frequent victim of shoplifting and protection rackets, and she was desperate to sell it. The next day, at the wedding, Keung helps negotiate an agreement that convinces Elaine to buy the market.

He immediately started a rivalry with a local motorcycle gang, led by Tony (Marc Akerstream), after beating various members at Elaine's supermarket, whom they tried to rob and ruin. That night, Keung sees a woman being kidnapped. He pretends to be a police officer to frighten his potential kidnapper. However, when Keung "saves" him, he attacks him, revealing that it's all a tactic to lure him to a place where Tony's gang attacks him again. Keung fended off some gangsters, but cornered into a blind alley. The gang wounded him by hitting the glass bottle around him. After that, Keung almost made him return to his uncle's apartment, but not before fainting in front of Nancy Francoise Yip, who is Tony's girlfriend and the woman who lured Keung earlier. It was revealed that Nancy was Danny's negligent brother, and he repaired Keung's wounds when he realized that Keung was Danny's friend. Danny informs Keung about Nancy's help the next morning, but Keung still does not know that Nancy is the one who lured her.

Later that morning, Keung goes to Elaine's market to let him know that he's lost his contract (during a fight with the gangs). The supermarket falls apart because of a failed attempt to stop the thief, and Elaine tells Keung about his desire to step back from the deal after realizing how often the market is a victim of theft and protection rackets. When two criminals demanding "protection money" come, Keung scares them. However, Tony & amp; his gang returned to the store, demanding "compensation" for Keung who injured them before. Elaine complied with their request, and they robbed and ruined the shop. Keung confronts them outside, and tells the gang that he is the boss of the shop. After Elaine is attacked, Keung reveals that he has called the police on them. The gang spread at the arrival of the police. Later, Tony & amp; his gang attempts to chase Keung for revenge, which causes Keung to escape by jumping from the roof of the parking garage to the fire escape in a building across the street.

Later, a member of Tony's gang member Angelo (Garvin Cross) was involved in an illegal diamond deal that got worse and stole a diamond. The criminal syndicate led by the White Tiger (Kris Lord) chases the diamond. Keung & amp; Danny was out together, and they watched some of the slaughter go down. Keung & amp; Danny ran inside for safety, leaving Danny's wheelchair in the hallway. Could not run & amp; hiding from the syndicate, Angelo leaves them in Danny's wheelchair. Several members of the syndicate were arrested (along with Angelo), but all were released for lack of evidence. Meanwhile, at Danny & amp; Nancy's apartment, Nancy overheard the conversation between Keung & amp; Danny, where he listened to Danny talking about emotional difficulties due to disability. Upon hearing this, he came out into the living room and apologized apologetically to Keung (but still Danny did not know about any particular incident).

Meanwhile, Elaine tries to frighten the criminals from the protection racket. However, they are not intimidated, and they attack him while taking his money. After this, he tried to sell the market to other Chinese couples, selling it using the same lie that Uncle Bill used to convince him. Keung watches this, and returns the check he uses to buy the market, asking that he repay it once he makes the money.

Later that night, Keung comes out, but not before being questioned by the syndicate people (who are disguised as FBI agents) looking for diamonds. They number Keung to call if he finds anything. Then Keung visits Nancy at the nightclub where he is an underwear & amp; model. When the gangsters see this, they chase Keung and Nancy, but they run away after Nancy drops their bikes. Keung advises him to stay away from Tony's gang and to take care of Danny. A romantic relationship developed among them. After failing to confront Keung, the motorcyclists fouled Elaine's supermarket, where two Angelo men were caught by the White Tigers, who appeared in the supermarket to find Angelo. Angelo's associates were unaware of his diamond robbery and one was executed in a tree shredder. Meanwhile, Keung and Nancy go to bikers headquarters after the latest supermarket attack, and Keung beats them in another fight. After the fight, he cursed and insulted the gang for their criminal life style and urged them to change for the better. Soon afterwards, one of the gangsters returned to the hideout, with the remnants of the executed thugs, whom he revealed as a warning to return the items Angelo stole. Keung agrees to help Tony & amp; his gang.

Keung contacts the syndicate (which he is FBI) â € <â €

Keung decides to call the police for help. They gave Keung's recording equipment and instructed him to show only one diamond gangster, and tried to get the gang to talk about murder and robbery. However, the syndicate men realize that Keung works with the police, and they take Keung to the secret place for him to be executed. However, Keung beat them and tried to escape. Then, the police came and drove the gangsters. The White Tigers hijacked the hovercraft and were pursued by Keung and the New York Police Department on the Hudson River. Hovercraft eventually runs through the streets, causing a lot of damage to the property. Keung ends the pursuit by stealing a large sword from a museum, pinning it into a sports car window and driving into a hovercraft, cutting up a rubber skirt and crashing a vehicle. After firing one of the non-lethal male syndicates to force them to uncover the location of the White Tiger, Keung moves an improved hovercraft to the golf course where the White Tiger plays with his subordinates. He runs it, leaving White Tiger naked on the ground.

Shoot and production

In his autobiography, I'm Jackie Chan: My Life in Action , Jackie Chan talks about the initial difficulties of filming in Vancouver arranged in New York. The production team must initially install fake graffiti during the day and bring it down all night, while making sure that no mountains make it into the background. However, Chan decided that it was best that the production team focus on the action alone without worrying too much about the scenery. Viewers note the mountains in the background, which are not in the NYC landscape, nor the NYC helicopters showing Canadian civil registration (C-GZPM).

The original oral dialogue consists of all actors who speak their native language most of the time. In a completely undubbed soundtrack, available on the Warner Japanese R2 DVD Release, Jackie Chan actually speaks the original Cantonese while FranÃÆ'§oise Yip and Morgan Lam (the actor who plays Nancy and Danny) speak English. All the original dialogue is meant to be dubbed in the international and Hong Kong film market, and New Line overdubbing cinema and slightly altering native English dialogue.

During filming, Chan injured his right foot while performing the action. He spent most of the remaining shooting time with one foot in a cast. When it comes to the film's climax, the crew coloring socks resemble the shoes on their good legs, which Chan charges on his players. Her legs are still not fully healed as she continues to shoot the next movie, Thunderbolt (filmed the same year but released earlier).

The lead actress and several stunt replacements were also injured during the motorcycle action shooting, with some suffering broken legs and ankles.

New Line Movie Connection

New Line Cinema acquired the film for international distribution and commissioned new music scores and English nicknames (with the participation of Jackie Chan). A Keung airplane scene flying to John F. Kennedy International Airport added to the opening credits. Two scenes added exclusively to the international version are Keung and Nancy escaping from the nightclub after the bikers found them together, and White Tiger took a golf blow before a subordinate approached him with his phone. None of these scenes are in the original Hong Kong release. Compared to the Hong Kong version, 17 minute cuts were made, and the new English ranks changed some context of character conversation. Keung being a cop and having a girlfriend in Hong Kong was never mentioned. Keung's father who was shot by robbers years ago was also not mentioned. In editing the New Line Cinema, Elaine bought a grocery store at her first meeting with Uncle Bill, but in the Hong Kong version, she decided to buy the market at Bill's wedding.

The new soundtrack replaces Chan's song of cover credits with the song "Kung Fu" by the band Ash, a lyric that mentions Jackie Chan, as well as figures and other asian characters everywhere in the west.

Home videos

Most DVD versions of the film contain a highly edited New Line Cinema USA piece, with relevant dubs made for each market. However, there is another version, which is closer to the original theatrical release.

Warner

  • DVD is produced by Warner Brothers HK for Hong Kong and South Korea. It contains the New Line Cinema version with the addition of a compact Cantonese and Mandarin soundtrack. It has an aspect ratio of 2.35: 1, but does not include English subtitles.
  • Warner Home Video also released a DVD in Japan version of Hong Kong. This version contains a slice of Hong Kong film. The dialog is completely undubbed in mono 2.0. However, the aspect ratio is trimmed to 1.85: 1 and does not contain English subtitles.
  • In Hong Kong, VCDs contain Hong Kong versions in Cantonese, with newly created English and Chinese subtitles also released. It's 2.35: 1.
  • Blu-Ray was released in the United States on October 6, 2015.

Thakral/Chinastar

It seems that a joint distribution deal was made, with Thakral releasing the film in China, and Chinastar releasing it in Hong Kong. This version does not contain credit, even movie titles, but rather the Hong Kong version. There is no English text and the ratio is approximately 2.10: 1.

Speedy

Malaysia distributor, Speedy, released VCD. As well as local sensors (for indecent words - also featuring an Angelo insulting image of Keung), it has a slightly different Canton/English soundtrack (some characters dubbed in Cantonese); there are English, Chinese and Malay translations. It was cut to approximately 1: 85: 1 and distorted to 1: 56: 1.

Funny

The film has three separate DVD releases by Taiwanese distributor Funny. Two of these DVDs feature Chinese versions dubbed with embedded subtitles. One of them contains Dolby 5.1 soundtrack only, while others contain Dolby and DTS soundtracks. The third release is a two-sided disc, which features the Mandarin Mandarin ranks on one side and the New Barcode version dubbed English on the other. Although it contains a dubbed soundtrack, this DVD is the only release that contains English subtitles for the Chinese version. All three are presented in 2.35: 1.

4 Movie Favorites

  • Another DVD was released as part of Movie Favorites 4: Martial Arts Collection . The film is exactly like New Line Cinema but is placed on the other side of the disc. The movie is also attached to The Corruptor, Showdown at Little Tokyo and Bloodsport.

Critical reception

When released in North America, Rumble in the Bronx received generally positive reviews, as most critics are pleased that Jackie Chan's movie has finally gained a broad theatrical release in North America. The film currently has an 79% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes. Most critics agree that the plot and acting are lacking, but Chan's action, action, and charm are made for it.

Roger Ebert's review for Chicago Sun-Times is:

"Any attempt to defend the film on a rational basis is futile. Not tell me about plots and dialogue, do not dwell on acting. The point is Jackie Chan - and, like Astaire and Rogers, he does what He does better than anybody, there's physical trust, grace, elegance by the way he moves. There's humor for choreography fights (which are never too horrible) He's having fun If we allow ourselves to get in the right frame of mind, so do we.

The film is also featured in a 2016 video essay by Every Frame A Painting, which draws attention to the fact that the film was taken in Vancouver despite being in the Bronx, where there are no visible mountains.
