The 2017 Las Vegas shoot took place on Saturday night, October 1, 2017 when an armed man fired on a crowd of concert goers at the Route 91 Harvest music festival on the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada, leaving 58 dead and 851 wounded. Between 10:05 and 10:15 p.m. PDT, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada, fired over 1,100 bullets from his room on the 32nd floor of the nearby Mandalay Bay hotel. About an hour after he fired his last shot into the crowd, he was found dead in his room from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The motive is still unknown.
This incident is the deadliest mass shooting carried out by an individual in the United States. It revived the debate about the law of weapons in the US, with attention focused on the stock of fire bumps, which Paddock used to fire semi-automatic weapons at the same level as automatic weapons.

Location
The Las Vegas Strip is a stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard in the southern city of Las Vegas in Clark County, Nevada. The Strip is known for its concentration of casinos and resort hotels, including the 43-storey Mandalay Bay southwest from the intersection with Mandalay Bay Road, in the unrelated paradise city.
Las Vegas Village, an area of ââ15 hectares (6.1 acres) used for outdoor performances, is located diagonally across the junction to the northeast. From 2014 onwards, it hosts the annual Route 91 Harvest music festival. The 2017 festival runs from September 29 to October 1, with over 22,000 participants on the last day.
Performers
Stephen Paddock is a 64-year-old former auditor and real estate entrepreneur who lives 80 miles (130 km) northeast of Las Vegas in a retired community in Mesquite, Nevada. Paddock is twice divorced, has a long-term girlfriend, and has no known child. He was the son of Benjamin Paddock, a bank robber who was on the most wanted list of FBI between 1969 and 1977. The only interaction that Paddock noted with law enforcement was a traffic citation.
Paddock is a high-risk gambler who places bets at a high enough rate to gain valuable benefits - for free like rooms and food. He is a familiar figure for the casino host in Las Vegas, but is not known among the gamblers at high risk because he plays mostly poker videos. He reportedly kept to himself and a heavy drinker. Paddock had lost a considerable amount of his fortune two years earlier, but had paid off all his gambling debts before the shootings.
Paddock may have considered attacking another event. He has researched large-scale venues in cities like Boston since at least 2017, and has booked a room overlooking the Lollapalooza festival in August 2017 in Chicago, but did not use it. According to her boyfriend, she and Paddock were at Mandalay Bay for an initial stay a month before the attack when she repeatedly got rid of Las Vegas Village from a different window in their room. From September 17th, Paddock lives in The Ogden in Downtown Las Vegas, which ignores the open Life Isow festival which runs from September 22 to September 24. Internet search terms from mid-September include "swat weapons", "ballistic chart 308", "SWAT Las Vegas", and "whether police use explosives".

Get started
Paddock arrives at Mandalay Bay on September 25, 2017. He orders to Room 32-135, a free room on the 32nd floor. Four days later, he also checks Room 32-134 which is directly connected. Both suites overlook the concert venue in Las Vegas Village. Between September 25 and October 1 - the day of the shootings - he was stockpiling armories, related equipment and ammunition that included fourteen AR-15 rifles (twelve of them with lumps and 100-round magazines), eight AR-10 rifles, , and a gun. Often with the help of hotel bellhops, he carried five suitcases to his room on September 25, seven on the 26th, two on the 28th, six on the 30th, and two on the 1st of October. The cell phone records also show that he also made several visits to his home in Mesquite. On September 30, he put the "Do Not Disturb" sign on the second door of the room. Paddock spent most of his time at Mandalay Bay before gambling shooting, often at night. He interacted with Mandalay Bay employees more than ten times during his stay, including twice on the day of filming; MGM Resorts International spokesman said they were all "normal in nature".
Attack
Mass shooting occurred between 10:05 and 10:15 pm. PDT on October 1, 2017, which is the third and final night of the festival. When filming began, country music singer Jason Aldean gave a closing performance.
Shortly before 10:00 Ã, p.m., hotel security guard Jesus Campos was sent to the 32nd floor to investigate the open door warning. He tried to open the door that provided direct access to the floor, but found that it would not open. After Campos entered the floor, he found an L-shaped bracket screwed to the door and door frame, which was responsible for blocking the door from opening. After reporting the discovery to his dispatch center, he heard a rapid drilling sound coming from Room 32-135 and went to investigate the matter. At around 10:05, he was hit in the right thigh by one of about 35 bullets that Paddock fired through his bedroom door. After Campos was beaten, he took refuge in the space between Room 32-122 and 32-124 and immediately informed the hotel via radio and cell phones that he had been shot, although he was sure he had been shot with a BB rifle or a bullet. At the same time, maintenance worker Stephen Schuck was on the same floor to fix the door that Campos reported as a barricade. Campos, already wounded, met Schuck and told him to take refuge. Schuck contacted the hotel's concierge through his radio, informed them of the ongoing shootings, and told them to call the police. Both the Metropolitan Police Department of Las Vegas and MGM Resorts International, owners of Mandalay Bay, have confirmed when information about the initial shootings was conveyed to the police.
After Paddock used the hammer to break the two windows in both of his suits, he began shooting at 10:05 Ã, pm. He eventually fired over 1,100 rounds of rifle around 490 yards (450 m) to the festival audiences. He initially started with several shots before firing in a prolonged blast. Many people in the crowd initially mistook firing for fireworks. During the shooting, the security fence prevented the concert goers from escaping from the 15-acre concrete floor. The firing sound continued, with a few short moments, over a ten-minute span and ending at 10:15 Ã, p.m.
In addition to firing on a concert audience, Paddock fired eight bullets into a large jet fuel tank at McCarran International Airport as far as 2,000 feet (600 m). Two of the bullets hit the outside of the tank, with one bullet through the tank. Fuel does not explode because jet fuel is mostly kerosene, which is unlikely to fire when hit by a bullet.
During the shooting, police were initially at a loss as to whether the shots came from Mandalay Bay, the nearby Luxor hotel, or a festival venue. There are also some fake shooter additional reports at other hotels on the Strip. Officers finally saw some shots in the middle of the north side of Mandalay Bay and replied to the hotel. At 10:12 Ã, p.m., Two officers on the 31st floor reported a gunshot on the floor above them. When the clerk arrived on the 32nd floor at 10:17 pm, span. and encountered Campos a minute later, he directed them to Paddock's room and helped others evacuate. Campos is then directed to seek medical attention for himself.
Between 10:26 and 10:30 Ã, p.m., Eight additional officers arrived on the 32nd floor; some officers who were manually violated through the Paddock door had closed the meeting with the bracket. The shooting stopped, and the police moved systematically down the hall, searching and cleaning every room, using the main key provided by Campos. At 10:55 Ã, p.m., The officers finished evacuating the guests. At 11:20 p.m., Police broke through Room 32-135 with explosives. Paddock was found dead on the floor from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The police then violated Room 32-134; upon entering the hotel suite, an officer accidentally fired a three-round shot from his weapon, but the bullet did not affect anyone. At 11:27 Ã, p.m., Officer announced via police radio that a suspect was defeated.
Immediate response
Most of Las Vegas Boulevard is closed while the SWAT police team is combing neighboring places and businesses. McCarran International Airport, adjacent to the set, was closed for several hours. About 300 people entered the airport property as they fled to safety from the shootings. This prompted officials to close all four runways. More than 25 flights were diverted to ensure that no planes would be fired, while other flights were canceled before the operation of the airfield resumed at 12:40 pm. Ã, a.m. on October 2nd. About 2:45 p.m. PDT on October 2, an emergency was announced at Clark County.
Early October 2, Sheriff Lombardo identified the suspect as Stephen Paddock.
Victim
Fifty-eight people were shot dead at a music festival; Paddock's suicide is the only death at Mandalay Bay Hotel. The death toll included 36 women and 22 men. The oldest is 67, the youngest 20. Six come from Nevada, 35 from California, 13 from another state, and four from Canada. The Clark County Detention Office determined that all 58 victims died from gunshot wounds. Thirty-one victims were declared dead at the scene, while the rest were declared dead in the hospital.
An additional 851 people were injured, 422 of them with gunshot wounds. As a result, many victims were transported to local hospitals, which included the Southern Nevada University Medical Center, Sunrise Hospital & amp; Medical Center, and at least one of the six Valley Health System hospitals. Sunrise Hospital treated the largest part of the wounded: 199 patients, 150 of whom arrived within a span of about 40 minutes. For unclear reasons, most patients are transported to Sunrise, the Center for Level II trauma. The University Medical Center, a nearby I trauma center, treated 104 patients. Six victims seek medical care in Southern California; UC Irvine Medical Center takes care of four and Loma Linda University Medical Center takes care of two people.
The incident is the deadliest mass shooting carried out by an individual in the United States, surpassing the death toll from the Orlando 2016 nightclub shooting, where 49 people were shot and killed.
Aftermath
In the morning after the shootings, the line to donate blood in Las Vegas stretches to the block. Wait time of six hours or more. Millions of dollars have also been raised to help victims and their families.
Nevada's governor Brian Sandoval described the shooting as "a tragic and heinous act of violence that has rocked the Nevada family". Jason Aldean, who sings while filming starts, posted condolences on Instagram and noted everyone who worked with him on the show survived the attack.
At a press conference, President Donald Trump described Paddock as "a very sick individual", and "a crazy man, [with] many problems". He added, "The police department has done a remarkable job, and we will talk about gun laws over time". A White House official spoke memo points, distributed to Trump's allies, against tightening gun control because "the new law will not stop the madman", but "will reduce the freedom of law-abiding citizens". On October 2, Trump issued a proclamation to honor the victims and their families. On Oct. 4, Trump visited the first shooter and first responders.
Roads and ceremonies of unity prayer were held in Las Vegas on October 7 to honor the dead. Speakers at the ceremony included Vice President Mike Pence and Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman. On the afternoon of October 15, thousands of people participated in the 3-mile journey between Circus Circus and Mandalay Bay.
The annual Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon takes place on November 12th and is the largest event held in this city since the shootings. The event received a large amount of security, which included 350 officers, anti-sniper surveillance posts, and a number of obstacles consisting of garbage trucks, buses and other large vehicles.
The NHL's Vegas Golden Knights expansion rewards the victims and respected response personnel before their first home game on October 10th. Later during the season, the number 58 became the first number in the history of the team to be retired, selected for 58 deaths during filming.
The future of the Las Vegas Village site is still undetermined.
Discussion of gun control â ⬠<â â¬
The shooting prompted support in the US Congress for a weapons attack law that would ban the fire market. The National Rifle Association (NRA) came out to support fire reserve regulations at the branch office. Many Democrats and some Republican Congresses have expressed their support for the ban on stocks because of fires. Senator Dianne Feinstein introduced a Senate bill that earned 39 Democrat sponsors. Two bipartisan bills have been introduced in the House of Representatives. Starting November, no Congress action is taken. House leaders say the issue of fire emission regulations should be decided by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, which originally approved rifle stocks. On November 6, Massachusetts became the first country to ban the sale, ownership, or use of the device.
Nine days after the shooting, eighteen US Democratic Senators filed a bill, the American Secure Act, which, if signed into law, would ban arms magazines that hold more than ten rounds of ammunition.
The stock price of firearms producers rose a day after the shootings, as happened after a similar incident. Investors are hoping arms sales will increase as fears that such an event could lead to tighter gun control laws and a rush of customers seeking to defend themselves from future attacks.
Investigation
According to the authorities with the Clark County Commissioner, the name "October 1" was declared the official title for mass shooting investigations.
Initial report
Researchers found hidden surveillance cameras placed inside and outside the hotel room, presumably so Paddock can monitor other people's arrivals. The cameras are not in record mode. Police said a handwritten note found in the room indicated Paddock had calculated the distance, wind and path from his hotel suite on the 32nd floor to the concert visitors he was targeting at the festival venue.
At a press conference on October 4, Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo stated there was evidence - which he refused to talk about - that Paddock intended to escape from the scene, and that he might get help from an accomplice. Investigators searched Paddock's room and found a "bulletproof vest" and a breathing apparatus, which was a survival kit that Paddock never used.
There are some changes in the official account and Paddock's shooting timeline against the hotel security guards, Campos. Police officials describe this adjustment as a "minute change" that is common in complex investigations.
In their first statement about the incident, police officers inaccurately reported that Campos arrived on the scene after Paddock started firing on the crowd. In a second statement, police officers reported, again inaccurately, that Campos was shot six minutes before Paddock started firing on the crowd. The report is based at 9:59 pm. notation in the hotel security log, which in the third statement was determined as the time when Campos found the barricaded door.
Sheriff Lombardo dismissed allegations that the timing changes were the result of a kind of conspiracy between the police department, the FBI and MGM Resorts International saying, "No one is trying to hide anything that refers to this investigation. The dynamics and size of this investigation require us to go through a large amount of information to draw an accurate picture. "
Initial investigation
Although the investigation is still ongoing, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department released its preliminary report on the event on January 18, 2018.
Police speculated that Paddock acted on his own and had not yet determined his motives. No relationship is identified with hate groups, terrorist groups or ideologies, and he does not record the reasons for his actions.
On February 2, 2018, Douglas Haig, an Arizon ammunition dealer, was sued in Nevada federal court with a "conspiracy to produce and sell ammunition that broke through unlicensed armor" after his fingerprints were uncovered in uncured armor-piercing ammunition in the Paddock suite.
Armament
Twenty-four firearms, large amounts of ammunition, and many high-capacity magazines capable of holding up to 100 rounds, are found in the suite. Fourteen firearms are semi-automatic caliber rifles of AR-15 semi-automatic caliber type -223: three produced by Colt, two by Daniel Defense, two by FN Herstal, two by LWRC International, two by POF-USA, one with 0.223 The Wylde Room by Christensen Arms, made by LMT, and one by Noveske. The others are eight 308-type AR-10 rifle guns, one American.308 caliber Ruger bulb, and a 0.38 caliber of Smith & amp; Wesson Model 342 revolver. The AR-15 rifle is equipped with a vertical front grip and a flame peg, the latter allowing it to recoil to propel their trigger at a rate of 90 revolutions in 10 seconds. The AR-10 rifle is equipped with various telescope shots and mounted on the bipod. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives determined that the firearm found in his hotel room, along with more weapons found in his home, had been legally purchased in Nevada, California, Texas and Utah. In the month before the shootings, he had tried to buy tracer ammunition, but the arms dealer he approached had no goods in stock. He buys tracking ammunition from a private seller in the Phoenix, Arizona gun show.
During subsequent investigations, ammonium nitrate (often used in improvised explosive devices) was found in the trunk of its Hyundai Tucson SUV, along with 1,600 rounds of ammunition and 50 pounds (23 kg) of Tannerite, a binary explosive used to create explosive targets for range shooting. Undersheriff Kevin McMahill said that while Paddock had "malicious intent" with the material, he did not seem to have installed an explosive device.
Conspiracy theory
Within hours and days of the shooting, false information and false news about the identity and motive of the shooter became viral in social media:
- A 4chan/pol/thread, which identifies the shooter and describes him as a registered Democrat, is briefly displayed in the "News" section of Google's search for the man's name. The incorrect information was circulated by a number of sites including Gateway Pundit .
- The fake news site YourNewsWire is spreading false information about a second gunman firing from the hotel's fourth floor.
- The top two pages that are trending on Facebook are items from Sputnik, a Russian government news agency. This includes a story that falsely claims the FBI has linked shooters to terrorist groups. The stories were later removed from Sputnik with an apology.
- The story linking the shooters to the Antifa has also been discredited.
- The terrorist groups of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) claim that Paddock is their "army" and that he has responded to Abu Bakar al-Baghdadi's call to attack coalition nations. ISIS has not provided any evidence for its claims, and has previously released some false claim claims for unrelated incidents. On October 9, 2017, the FBI declared that Paddock's attacks were not linked to international terrorism.
Google and Facebook are criticized for displaying such fake news in some of their search results. The two technology companies are said to have failed in their responsibility to keep false stories from reaching the public. Facebook then says the algorithm is designed to detect and remove fake stories, but fails to function adequately in this regard.
After the shootings, some media reported that YouTube search results for information about the shootings were back links to conspiracy videos. YouTube states that they have changed their search algorithm to promote news sources that are considered more authoritative. Some experts claim that the removal of this content ironically triggers conspiracy theories by making the cover look clear.
The shooting casualties have been accused of being paid actors, with some having received death threats on social media.
Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones stated that "Vegas is as fake as a three-dollar bill or as a birth certificate." Conspiracy theorists claimed that there were some gunners and that details of the massacre were being covered up to promote arms control laws.
