Professional career
The 2003 success of the Miami Redhawks led to expectations that Roethlisberger would be drafted early. During the GMAC Bowl, the commentator discusses some of his skills that will translate into success in the NFL.
At the time of joining, Roethlisberger scored 25 on Wonderlic. Roethlisberger is one of the players invited to attend the draft along with the others in the "Green Room" and featured on the show Hey Rookie, Welcome to the NFL .
Roethlisberger was one of four quarterbacks taken in the first round of the 2004 NFL Draft along with Philip Rivers, Eli Manning, and J. P. Losman. Due to trade involving Manning and Rivers, Roethlisberger was the highest midfielder of the year who played for the team that compiled it. Before Commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced the election of Roethlisberger, a phone call received by Steelers head coach Bill Cowher, shown live on ESPN, confirmed the team's selection before the official announcement.
Roethlisberger, Rivers, and Manning have all been selected for the Pro Bowl since becoming a starter. Roethlisberger and Manning have each won two Super Bowls. The trio have been compared well with the 1983 Quarterback class, which includes the Hall of Fame quarterbacks And Marino, John Elway, and Jim Kelly.
season 2004
Roethlisberger was elected 11th overall in the 2004 NFL Draft by Pittsburgh Steelers. On August 4, 2004, he signed a six-year contract worth $ 22.26 million in salaries and bonuses, with an additional $ 17.73 million available through incentives. He was mentioned by Steelers coach Bill Cowher in a press conference as a quarterback franchise.
On March 4, 2008, Pittsburgh Steelers and Roethlisberger approved an eight-year, $ 102 million contract. Roethlisberger has two years left in the original that he signed after the draft. He has stated that he wants to retire as a Steeler.
He started the rookie season as a No. 1 midfielder. 3 behind veteran Tommy Maddox and Charlie Batch. When the Batch was injured in the preseason, however, Roethlisberger took over the role of No. 1 quarterback. 2. Maddox started, and won, the season opener against the Raiders and started against the Ravens, but after an ineffective outing and third-quarter injury to Maddox, Roethlisberger stepped up for his first NFL action. Despite spurring a mild comeback, the Steelers lost to the Baltimore Ravens 30-13. In his regular season debut against the Ravens, Roethlisberger completed 12/20 bait for 176 yards and two goals and two interception. During the match, he threw his first career touchdown, with a three-yard bait to El Randle El and also threw his first career interception into Ravens linebacker Adalius Thomas. Maddox injury changed the Steelers' initial plan for Roethlisberger, who for him to sit on the bench or play sparingly during the first or second season to learn the team system. Instead, he started his third game of the season against the Miami Dolphins, completing a 13-3 victory with a 12/22 finish, passing the yard, a touchdown, and interception. On Sunday 6th, in a 24-20 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, he was 21 of 25 for 193 yards passing and two goals to earn AFC Offensive First Officer for Sunday award.
As a rookie, he went 13-0 in the regular season (14-1 including the playoffs) as the starting quarterback, helping Steelers become the first AFC team to win 15 wins (2-1 under Maddox [first and last two games], 13-0 under Roethlisberger) in a regular season, surpassing former Steeler Mike Kruczek as a record for best start by a rookie (6-0) and surpassing the total score of victory as a rookie, set by Chris Chandler and Joe Ferguson. On January 5, 2005, Roethlisberger was unanimously chosen as the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year by the Associated Press, the first quarterback in 34 years to gain honor. In addition, he was named Team NFL All-Rookie.
On October 31, 2004, he had one of his biggest games, leading the Steelers to a 34-20 victory over defending Super Bowl champions and unbeaten New England Patriots, ending their NFL-21 winning streak record. He completed 18 of 24 passing trials for 196 yards, two goals and no turnover. In the next game, the Steelers beat the otherwise unbeaten Philadelphia Eagles 27-3, with Roethlisberger going 11 from 18 to 183 yards, with two goals and one interception.
In his first national game on television on Sunday Night Football, he led the Steelers to a 17-16 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was almost perfect on the night, finishing 14 of 17 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns. 37-yard field goal Jeff Reed in the last minute gave Steelers and Roethlisberger their tenth straight victory.
Two weeks later, Roethlisberger faced the New York Giants and no. 1 overall pick from draft 2004, Eli Manning. Roethlisberger posted his first career 300 yards through the game, with 18 of 28 passes for 316 yards and goals. He leads the fifth drive that won the game this season, capping the drive with Jerome Bettis touchdown running for a 33-30 victory. Eli Manning threw an interception to seal the game for Pittsburgh.
In the division playoffs against the New York Jets, Roethlisberger threw two interceptions. One of the interception was returned for touchdown, and the other was thrown with 2:03 left in the fourth quarter, which created a field goal that could potentially win the game by Jets kicker Doug Brien. Brien missed the kick when the time ends (his second crisp kick in the last two minutes of the game), forcing the match into overtime. In overtime, Roethlisberger leads the Steelers off the field and puts them in position for a field-of-game goal, a 33-yard effort made by Jeff Reed, sending the Steelers to the AFC Championship for the fourth time in 10 years.
On January 23, 2005 at the AFC Championship Game in Pittsburgh, Roethlisberger completed 14 of 24 passing trials for 226 yards and two goals, but he also threw three expensive intercepts, one of which was returned for touchdown by Rodney Harrison. The Steelers lost the match with the Super Bowl champion, New England Patriots, with a score of 41-27.
Season 2005: First Super Bowl Championship
In the regular 2005 season, the Steelers finished 11-5. After securing the AFC wild card place on the way to victory in the Super Bowl, Steelers took off disruptions at Indianapolis and Denver in the AFC playoffs in addition to winning over Cincinnati and Seattle higher seeds.
During the regular 2005 season, Roethlisberger missed four games due to various knee injuries. The Steelers went 9-3 with Roethlisberger in quarterback and 2-2 without him. He led the league at Yards Per Attempt with 8.90, and was ranked third behind Peyton Manning and Carson Palmer with 98.6.
The Super Bowl game began on January 8, 2006 when Roethlisberger helped lead the Steelers to a playoff win over Cincinnati Bengals - a North AFC rival who beat Steelers by seven points in the regular season to win the division championship. The rematch featured two teams with identical records, having divided their regular season series since each team won on the road. At the beginning of the game on the first pitch of Carson Palmer, a tackle by former Steeler Kimo von Oelhoffen resulted in a completely torn Palestinian cruciate ligament (ACL). The Bengals backup quarterback, Jon Kitna, came and led the Bengals to a 10-0 and 17-7 lead. However, a 17-7 lead in the second half of the quarter will be the last time in the 2005 postseason season that the Steelers will trail the opponent by more than three points. After Kitna failed to produce, the Steelers took advantage by taking the next 24 consecutive points, and victory, in a 31-17 victory in Cincinnati.
Their second road win came on 15 January. Roethlisberger leads the Steelers against the Indianapolis Colts, the NFL top team throughout the season and a heavy favorite to represent the AFC at Super Bowl XL. Roethlisberger threw for 197 yards and recorded a game tackle on Colts' defensive back Nick Harper, who had just recovered Jerome Bettis fumbling with less than two minutes left in the game. Pittsburgh led early but had to endure the Colts comeback to win 21-18, after the wrong calling that the NFL later admitted was a mistake, which canceled Troy Polamalu's interception that would secure the game for the Steelers. Roethlisberger's suppression of Harper, dubbed by many as The Tackle II or The Immaculate Redemption, was compared by many for "The Immaculate Reception" in 1972, when Franco Harris made a magical reception and scored the winning goal of the game against the Oakland Raiders. The win marked the first time in playoff history that the sixth seeded NFL playoff team beat top seeds.
On January 22, 2006, the Steelers defeated the Broncos 34-17 in Denver to win the AFC Championship and advance to Super Bowl XL. Roethlisberger completed 21 of 29 passes for 275 yards and threw two goals through and scored one own goal in four pirated play-action games. The run is the last goal of the game, sealing victory for the Steelers.
Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl XL 21-10 at Seattle Seahawks in Detroit on February 5, 2006. Roethlisberger had one of the worst passing games of his career, finishing just nine out of 21 bait for 123 yards and two interception; Its 22.6 passer rating is the lowest in Super Bowl history by a winning quarterback. Although he changed the eight third situations in the game to help the Steelers win, there was nothing bigger than a 37-yard pass to Super Bowl XL MVP Hines Ward in the third and 28th rounds that set the Steelers first touchdown (one quarterback yard slipped by Roethlisberger on third and goals). With that victory, Roethlisberger, at the age of 23, became the youngest quarterback to win the Super Bowl, a record previously held by Tom Brady of the New England Patriots.
2006 season
After an off-season bike accident where he was seriously injured, Roethlisberger missed the opening game of the 2006 season after undergoing appendectomy on 3 September. Booting Charlie Batch begins and leads the Steelers to victory over Miami. Roethlisberger played the following game against Jacksonville on Monday Night Football. His return resulted in sub-par performance as he threw two interceptions without touchdown in a 9-0 loss. In the third week, Roethlisberger finished less than half his bait for three interception and there was no goal in a 28-20 defeat over the Bengals. The last interruption came in the final seconds of the game, in the final zone, ending Pittsburgh's comeback effort.
In a five-week game against San Diego Chargers on Sunday Night Football, Roethlisberger looked sharp during the first half, leading three scoring drives. However, in the second half, he threw two interceptions, both shifting the momentum away from the Steelers and causing a 23-13 Chargers victory. In the sixth week against Kansas City's Chief, Roethlisberger made his first major game of the season, finishing 16 of 19 passes for 238 yards with two goals (the first of this year) and no interceptions during the 45-7 defeat of Chiefs. During his seventh week in Atlanta, Roethlisberger continued his success, becoming 16 of 22 for 237 yards and three touchdowns. But during the third quarter, Roethlisberger was released from the field after suffering a concussion following a controversial attack by Falcons defensive end Patrick Kerney. Roethlisberger was replaced by Charlie Batch, and the Steelers then lost 41-38 overtime.
On October 29 against Oakland Raiders, Roethlisberger threw four interceptions in a 20-13 defeat. The loss was the fifth of the season - two more than he had in his first two seasons as a starter - and gave him a total of 11 interception, compared to just six goals this season. In a weekly nine week re-match of the 2005 AFC championship game against Denver, Roethlisberger threw a 433-yard career but had three of the six Steelers turnover in a 31-20 loss. Roethlisberger and Steelers returned to winning ways in a home game a week later against the New Orleans Saints. He graduated for 265 yards and three goals in a 38-31 victory.
At week 11, Roethlisberger overcame three first-half interceptions with a throw of 224 yards and two goals in the fourth quarter, leading the Steelers to 21 points and again beating Cleveland Browns, 24-20. The following week, Roethlisberger and Steelers were held scoreless in a 27-0 defeat to the Baltimore Ravens. Roethlisberger completed 21 from 41 to 214 yards and two interception. He was fired nine times, including once by Ravens Bart Scott linebacker, who sent him to the sidelines for a while. He also groped once, the Ravens back for a touchdown in the second half. Roethlisberger bounced back the following game, throwing for 198 yards and two goals in a 20-3 win over Tampa Bay.
Pittsburgh kept their playoff hopes alive in the 14th week with a 27-7 victory against Browns. Roethlisberger went 11 from 21 to 225 yards with one goal, and rushed for another one. At week 15, Roethlisberger threw for 140 yards and a touchdown in 37-3 from the Carolina Panthers. The following week, Baltimore got rid of Pittsburgh from the playoffs. In a 31-7 defeat, Roethlisberger was intercepted twice and threw 156 yards.
Roethlisberger ended the season on a fine note by beating Cincinnati Bengals 23-17 in extra time in what would be Bill Cowher's last match as coach of the Steelers. He's 19 for 28 passes with 280 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. In extra-time, Roethlisberger completed a skewed pass to rookie Santonio Holmes, who went 67 yards for the winning touchdown. This victory removed the Bengals from the playoff bout.
2007 season
In Week 1 against Browns, Roethlisberger threw four passing goals in the game for the first time in his NFL career as he led the Steelers to win in the debut of new head coach Steelers Mike Tomlin. Against the Cardinal on Sunday 4, Roethlisberger seeks victory over his former offensive coordinator, Ken Whisenhunt, who was then the head coach of the Cardinals. However, Roethlisberger suffered his first loss of the season as he was intercepted twice; once in the red zone, and then despair with six seconds left in the game.
In Week 9 against the Ravens on Monday Night Football, Roethlisberger graduated for the top five career passes, which tied the record of teams held by Terry Bradshaw and Mark Malone. All five goals were thrown in the first half, making Roethlisberger one of two quarterbacks in the 2007 season (the other being Tom Brady), and only the fifth quarterback since the 1970 merger, to achieve such a feat. He also posted a perfect 158.3 passer rating. Against Browns on Sunday 10, Roethlisberger helped the Steelers erase a 15-point deficit against rival Browns in a 31-28 win. On Sunday 12th against Dolphins, Roethlisberger set a Steelers record, completing 85.7% of his pass (18 of 21) when the Steelers beat the Miami Dolphins, 3-0 - an achievement that made it all the more remarkable given the weather conditions. Pittsburgh was hit with a heavy thunderstorm, delaying Monday night's game 30 minutes by lightning, while turning new ground on the pitch, laid early that week, into a wet mess. In many parts of the field, players sink a few inches with each step. After one of the game clippings, the ball angrily stood upright, trapped in the ground during a collision. With a goalless game in the fourth quarter, Roethlisberger led a goal that had won the game for the only point of the night.
Roethlisberger scored his 29th goal of the season in the 15th Week against the Jaguars, breaking the previous season's goalscoring record by Bradshaw. This is the third perfect passinger game rating, which ties Peyton Manning to the most regular season game in NFL history. He won the AFC Offensive Second Officer of the Week nod for the 2007 season.
To end his comeback season, Roethlisberger was selected for his first Pro Bowl, joining five other members of the Steelers team in the AFC squad. 32 goals Roethlisberger passed third in the NFL, behind Tony Romo and Tom Brady, while the 104.1 passenger rating was second only to Brady. Roethlisberger also set a new Steelers season record with 32 goals through touchdown.
Within a week of re-matches, the Steelers were defeated by Jaguars in the AFC Wild Card game, 31-29. Roethlisberger finished third in the Player of the Year selection, behind Randy Moss Patriot and Greg Ellis Dallas Cowboys, who won the award. Roethlisberger played in his first Pro Bowl in Hawaii.

On Sunday 13th in New England, in consistent rain, Roethlisberger completed 17 of 33 passes for 179 yards, two goals, and one interception. After trailing, 10-3, in the second quarter, Roethlisberger led the Steelers to 30 points without reply in a 33-10 win.
Against Cowboys on Sunday 14, Roethlisberger earned his 49th win as an early quarterback, breaking the record for the most victories by quarterback in the first five seasons of the NFL. The Steelers snatched the AFC North in Week 15 with a win over the Ravens, and with losses the following week winning 2nd seed in the playoffs. The Steelers beat Chargers in Division and Ravens in the AFC Championship Game on their way to the Super Bowl.

He suffered a fourth concussion from his NFL career. After sitting out overtime in the 12th week in Baltimore, Roethlisberger started against Oakland Raiders in Week 13 and graduated for 278 yards and 2 goals. He threw away a forward touchdown pass to Hines Ward with 1:56 remaining, only to have the Raiders answer back with a victory touchdown with nine seconds left.
