The Colonial Life Arena is a multi-purpose arena in Columbia, South Carolina, primarily home to the University of South Carolina male and female basketball team. Opened instead of the Carolina Coliseum under the name of Carolina Center in 2002, the 18,000-seater arena also hosts events such as conferences, concerts and graduation ceremonies throughout the year. It is the largest arena in the state of South Carolina and the eighth-largest campus campus.

The naming rights were obtained in 2003 by Unum, the Portland, Maine-based, insurance company and its name was changed to Colonial Center after Colonial Life & amp; Accident Insurance Company, a Unum subsidiary headquartered in Columbia. On July 22, 2008, the USC board approved the renaming of the buildings to the Colonial Life Arena as part of a rebranding by Unum (then moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee) from Colonial Life & Accident as Colonial Life.

Riwayat dan gunakan

The first arena opened on November 22, 2002, with a season opener for the South Carolina women's basketball team. The almost-endless crowd of 17,712 fans saw the 72-58 Gamecocks victory over Clemson's rival in the state, at a one-dollar fee, at that time used by women's basketball teams to promote big games. The official opening ceremony took place December 2, 2002. The men's basketball team defeated Temple 66-47. On January 26, 2010, South Carolina beat the # 1 ranking in Kentucky, ranked 68 and unbeaten in the arena, one of the biggest victories in South Carolina history.

In addition to Gamecock basketball, Colonial Life Arena also hosts the South Carolina High School Basketball Championships every year. The facility was built to also host ice hockey games, and is meant to be the new home of Columbia Inferno ECHL. However, due to legal issues with funding for the facility, Inferno never played there. The franchise ceased operations in 2008, but after plans for a new arena in neighboring Lexington County failed, the franchise was eventually canceled in 2014.

The Colonial Life Arena was ranked 22nd in the world in ticket sales in 2003. It also ranks # 1 in the arena in Carolinas and is the world's # 2 ranked university arena in 2005, based on ticket sales for the tour event.

It is managed by Spectra (formerly Global Spectrum), a subsidiary of Comcast Spectacor facility management. The Philadelphia 76ers belonging to the NBA, then owned by Comcast Spectacor, played an exhibition match at the venue in October 2005.

In 2007, it was home to Columbia Stingers of the National Indoor Football League. Arena has hosted the Charlotte Bobcats and the New York Knicks in the past.

The venue, like all facilities run by Comcast-Spectator, has its own ticketing policy, and therefore concerts are not controlled by big ticket industry companies.

Tickets are provided by New Era Tickets, and tickets can be purchased through the Arena website.
