Rise to be famous and successful
The Sisters of Davis are not related; Skeeter Davis is the stage name of Mary Frances Penick. He met Betty Jack Davis at Dixie Heights High School in Edgewood, Kentucky in 1947. They formed a close relationship as friends and musicians. Also sharing a career in the music business, singing and recording, they decided to appear as The Davis Sisters.

Fortune Record
The duo began appearing regularly on radio shows in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Detroit, adjacent Michigan. They first started recording in Detroit at Fortune Records in 1952. The couple recorded "Jealous Love," (Fortune 170) a song written by Devora Brown, co-owner of the Fortune label. Two other singles followed in 1953: "Kaw-League/Sorrow And Pain" (Fortune 174) and "Heartbreak Ahead/Steel Wool" (Fortune 175).
RCA
In 1953, they landed a record deal with RCA Records. While recording for RCA, the session is supported by country stars and producers Chet Atkins in the future. In the same year, they released their first single, "I Forgot More Than You Ever Know". The sad and heartbreaking song was the number 1 hit in the country, as well as the top 20 pop hits. While their vocals invited the sound of an older Appalachian harmony duo like Blue Sky Boys and Delmore Brothers, Nashville Sound's support made the overall sound more in line with their more polished counterparts, Louvin Brothers.
Tragedy and reform
Shortly after the release of "I Forgot More Than You Know", the Sisters Davis had a car accident outside Cincinnati, Ohio on August 2, 1953, who killed Betty Jack instantly and injured Skeeter.
Skeeter reformed the group with Betty Jack, Georgia's older sister. The new duo continued to perform and record until 1956, but failed to get another blow. "Georgia is a good singer, but it's not the same," Skeeter said in Liner's 1995 note to The Essential Skeeter Davis.
Skeeter Davis went on to a successful solo career. Davis continued to perform frequently in most of the 1990s and into 2000. In 2001 he became paralyzed by breast cancer that would claim his life. While Davis remained a member of the Grand Ole Opry until his death, he last appeared on the program in 2002. He died of breast cancer at Nashville hospital, at the age of 72, on September 19, 2004.
