Plot

Rocky, Alex, and Money are three troubled people in Detroit who make a living by breaking into the homes secured by Alex's father's security company and selling the items they take. However, people who buy stolen goods for Money do not give them a fair price, not enough to finance Rocky's dream of moving to California with his younger sister, Diddy, to escape from a rude mother and her alcoholic girlfriend. Money received a tip that a medically retired Army Special Force veterans living in an abandoned Detroit neighborhood had $ 300,000 cash in his home, granted as a settlement after a rich young woman, Cindy Roberts, killed her daughter in a car accident. The three lurked around the house and found that the man was in fact blind, because he was blinded from the explosion during the Gulf War.

That night, three people approached the house and drank the Blind Man dog. Finding all entrances locked, Rocky enters the house through a small window and lets two people in. The group looked for a house to make money but could not find it. Money puts sleeping gas in Blind Man's bedroom, then, assuming the money is behind the locked door below, shoots the key. The sound woke the Blind Man, who demanded to know who else had the Money. Money insists on him alone, and the Blind man kills him with his own weapon. Frightened, Rocky hides in the closet, where she sees the Blind man opening the safe to check his money. After she leaves, she opens the safe and takes the money, which seems at least $ 1 million. The Blind Man however finds Rocky's shoes and realizes that Money is not the only intruder.

Rocky and Alex avoided the Blind Man and rushed into the basement. There, they were surprised to find a controlled and clogged woman in a self-made cushioned cell. Desperately, he showed them newspaper articles about car accidents; they realize that she is Cindy, the rich young woman, who was taken hostage by Blind Man. They set him free and ran to the storm barn door, only to be released by Blind Man, who mistakenly shot and killed Cindy. She cries when she finds her dead, crying "my darling." Rocky and Alex escape into the basement while the Blind man closes the lights, stuffing them into the darkness. After a blind struggle, Alex tapped Blind Man, and they fled to the top floor.

After blocking the basement door, they find the Blind Dog, which has awakened. They could not open the front door just before the dog attacked them, and were forced to flee to the bedroom, where they were trapped by the barred windows. Rocky escapes from the room through the ventilation duct, while the dog attacks Alex, who falls from window to ceiling, unconscious. When Alex wakes up, the Blind man shoots out the skylights and corners of Alex in his utility room, appearing to kill him with a pair of pruning shears. Meanwhile, the dog chases Rocky through the vent, and he is captured by Blind Man. He awakens under control in the basement like Cindy, and the Blind Man reveals that Cindy took his son to replace the one he killed. He then gets ready for Rocky's artificial insemination with a turkey baster, explaining that he will now be the one who gave him a child. It was revealed that the Blind accidentally stabbed the body of Money with scissors instead of Alex, who managed to save Rocky and handcuff Blind Man.

Rocky and Alex can not call the police, because their blood is all over the house, so they try to go through the front door. The Blind Man freed and shot Alex dead. Rocky escaped, but was chased by the dog. He managed to trap the dog in the trunk of his car, but was recaptured by the Blind Man. Inside his house, Rocky confuses the Blind Man by turning on his home alarm system, then hitting him repeatedly in the head with a crowbar and pushing him into the basement. Firearms to his side as he falls. Believing he was dead, Rocky fled before the police arrived.

With that money, Rocky prepares to leave Detroit with Diddy on the train to Los Angeles. Before the ride, he saw a news report stating that the Blind brutally attacked by two intruders (Alex and money) at home, but is able to defend themselves by shooting and killing both his assailant in a place and in a stable condition in hospital, but did not report Rocky or stolen money or Cindy.

Production

Fede ÃÆ' lvarez notes that making the film is, in some ways, a reaction to his debut film Evil Dead (2013), especially the criticism that the movie is too much blood, too focused on surprising audiences, and is a remake. In response, Alvarez decided to create Do not Breathe , an original story that contained less blood and focused more on the shocking tension on the audience. She wanted to avoid making a supernatural-related film, because she felt it was too trendy. Choosing to make an antagonist blind is the result of deliberately taking advantage of it; Alvarez explains, "Sometimes you naturally give them strength and make them more threatening than normal people, so we wonder what if we do the opposite and take his eyes off and blind him." Alvarez has called the film "rehearsal exercise" and noted that the film deliberately broke down the metaphor like the fact that the house in question is "a good house on a frightening street", not the opposite, or that the film is an invasion of the house. stories told from the point of view of the invaders.

On May 1, 2015, Daniel Zovatto joined the cast. On May 22, 2015, Dylan Minnette was cast in the film, and on June 18, 2015, Jane Levy and Stephen Lang joined the cast. The subject of photography begins on June 29, 2015. Though the film was installed in Detroit, the film was primarily taken in Hungary; just a few views of Detroit that were filmed there. Alvarez estimates that the film costs about half of Evil Dead, and welcomes the change, as it allows fewer studio breaks.

Release

The film premiered on South by Southwest on March 12, 2016, and was theatricalally released on August 26, 2016, by Screen Gems.

box office

Do Not Breathe grossed $ 89.2 million in North America and $ 67.9 million in other regions with a worldwide total of $ 157.1 million, against a production budget of $ 9.9 million. Due to its low production budget, the film became a sleeping hit and was considered a huge financial success, with a net profit of $ 59.1 million, when factoring along with all costs and revenues. For Sony Pictures, this is the second surprise hit in late summer 2016, following the Sausage Party .

Do not Breathe was released in the United States and Canada on August 26, 2016, and was originally projected to be $ 11-14 million gross from 3,051 theaters on its opening weekend, with some estimates going as high as $ 20 million, and many publications that recorded it could be the first film to lower the Suicide Squad from the top of the box office. It earned $ 1.9 million from Thursday night's preview play, at 2,500 theaters, and $ 10 million on its opening day. It fell just 1.5% on Saturday, generating $ 9.8 million, which is unusual as R-rated horror movies tend to do well on their first day and fall sharply in earnings from day two and beyond. Compared to other 2016 horror movies, Lights Out fell 22%, while The Conjuring 2 fell 15%. In total, it grossed $ 26.4 million in its opening weekend, well above the initial projection of 120% and easily evicted Suicide Squad to take the top spot at the box office. This is the biggest original horror debut of this year (besting 10 Cloverfield Lane ), the biggest Screen Screen ever in the August Opener (beating the takers ) and the biggest debut for R- rated movies the original horror since The Conjuring in 2013. After finishing first place, the film continued to dominate the box office for the second weekend, generating $ 15.8 million and about $ 19.7 million for four business days holiday, one of the best numbers ever for a long weekend getaway. As a result, the horror film became the second horror movie to occupy the top of the box office weekend twice in a row since 2014. The second weekend's decline was only -40%, a remarkable achievement given the fact that horror movies usually fall at least 60% or more at the end their second week. Gradual decline occurs due to vacation. It only took 11 days to go beyond the previous Alvarez movie, reboot Evil Dead .

Although the film fell to third place on the third weekend as a result of being followed by Sully and When Bough Breaks , it continued to witness a strong hold by falling 49% after adding another 333 theaters.

Outside North America, the biggest film debut is in the United States ($ 1.3 million), Germany ($ 1.3 million), Brazil ($ 1.2 million) Mexico ($ 1.2 million) and Australia ($ 1 million). It scored the third largest opening of the year for a Hollywood movie in Korea with $ 4.5 million. It's at the speed to become the best-selling horror film in Uruguay.
