Route description

Interstate 90 enters Idaho and Kootenai County east of the Spokane River bridge near the State Line community, the smallest town in Idaho. It continues east through Post Falls to Coeur d'Alene, the county seat, and meets US Route 95. The I-90 turns southeast and passes north of downtown, accessible via the Interstate Business Loop, and Lake Coeur d'Alene. It continues east-southeast to the Fourth of July Summit at an altitude of 3,081 feet (939 m) and descends to Cataldo, home to the Old Cataldo Mission built 165 years ago in 1853.

Shortly after leaving Cataldo, I-90 entered Shoshone County and passed or near the community of Pinehurst, Kellogg, Osburn, Wallace, and Mullan. I-90 leaves the county and state in Lookout Pass at 4,725 feet (1,440 m)) and enters Montana.

History

Interstate 90 via Idaho was once the US 10 Route, although some parts of the I-90 were cut off as new roads. The small town of Wallace in the Silver Valley is still proud because it has the last red light on I-90. The city center has many historic buildings, which will be destroyed by a planned early route from the highway, so that in 1976, city leaders placed the center of the city on the National Register of Historic Places. The alternatives discussed in 1963 include tunnels and twin levels.

As a result, the federal government was forced to incur substantial costs to convert freeways to the northern edge of downtown and increase it. The work in that section continued in 1984, and opened in September 1991. Bicycle lanes were channeled under that section of the segment. Before moving to the viaduct, the I-90 went off the highway on Wallace's west bank, then turned to the road surface and followed the main artery as the US 10 Route through the city, which included the last traffic light on I-90 between Seattle and Boston. After reaching the eastern end of the city it becomes a limited access highway divided once again.

The interstate was also trekked along Lake Coeur d'Alene as a surface road before the Memorial Memorial Veterans Memorial completed in 1992, walking further up the lake.
